This weekend, July 27-31, the Omega Psi Phi fraternity descends on Washington, D.C., to celebrate its centennial. Founded November 17, 1911 by Howard University students Edgar Amos Love, Oscar James   Cooper and Frank Coleman and their faculty adviser, Dr. Ernest Everett Just., the organization now boasts an illustrious list of men who are leaders in the arts, the sciences, academics, athletics, civil rights,   education, government, and business. In honor of the anniversary, highlights nine of the outstanding business leaders who are proud to call themselves Ques.

With summer in full swing, most people are in search of a destination getaway—a place to kick back and relax, while enjoying all that their temporary home away from home has to offer. But sometimes you can accomplish the same goal by taking advantage of the signature sites of your own city. Why not save up for the next getaway by opting for the convenient (and often more affordable) staycation?  It’s an option Tanya Hall, executive director of the Philadelphia Multicultural Affairs Congress (MAC)—a division of the Philadelphia Convention & Visitors Bureau—urges locals to explore.  “We want to make sure we have our own footprint in terms of a destination for African Americans,” says Hall. That very footprint includes various city sites, from the history housed at the African American Museum to down home southern cuisine offered at Ms. Tootsie’s Restaurant Bar & Lounge. packed up and explored the northeast domain, suggesting fun ideas for families, couples and solo travelers in the City of Brotherly Love. —Janel Martinez

MARVIN GAYE, 44:  A Motown legend and gifted songwriter, Gaye racked up an impressive musical catalogue of timeless hits records that ranged from political commentary to love ballads to poetic soul that touched millions of fans. Having several bouts with drugs and depression throughout the years, Gaye’s personal demons got the better of him when he and his father got into an altercation on April 1, 1984 that led to the legendary singer’s death from a fatal gunshot wound.
