TWITTER: I know that this is probably an obvious one, but how do you really engage with Twitter? Do you use it as a personal tool to connect with others? Promote your business? Both? Do you need a personal and business account? I would say, it all depends. I have one account for me personally, which I also use professionally. When my new book, Chasing Youth Culture And Getting It Right, is published in April, I will be using another account for book tweets only. I want to make sure that those messages go to people who want data on youth marketing specifically. So the moral of this story is, know your target market. Your tweets will have a greater impact if you’re really focused on who you’re trying to reach.

The workplace is changing fast. Technology is changing even faster. Are universities keeping pace with either one? Is the U.S. moving fast enough to train and educate a workforce to compete in a global economy? The pressure to innovate within corporations and in small businesses has never been greater. The shift from industrial age thinking to an adaptive, digital, innovative culture will not just be the responsibility of the employer but the employee as well. The real question is: How fast are you changing?

In the U.S. workforce we are trained to think methodically with antiquated processes and tremendous uncertainty in the economy. We have experienced decades of success in industrial thinking and an education system that has been out paced by its foreign competitors. Are we now victims of our own success? What does this mean for the U.S. workforce? Here are four changes in the new economy workplace. —Hajj Flemings

Fashion business veteran Gerard Murray has seen success both as an independent business owner with the School of Hard Knocks clothing line and with large corporations. After taking a brief hiatus from the industry, he resurfaced in the college licensing business as the president of Final IV Enterprises LLC, parent company of Tradition Ever Since.

With Tradition, Murray has carved out a niche by creating lifestyle apparel for HBCU’s. After severing ties with New Era in 2009, Murray and his partners—Carol Callender-Murray and Tim Gray—decided to take the independent route and the gamble has paid off. Tradition booked $800,000 in sales this past year and the company is projected to double that number in 2012. When assessing the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. the number of protesters he helped rouse, the amount of books documenting his philosophy that he published and the total revenue generated by artistic projects made in his honor only tell a fraction of the story. To truly decode Dr. King you must take into account the impact he has had on the global issues of race, class and social justice by virtue of inspiring change. In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, BlackEntperise.com spoke with James Peterson, the Director of Africana Studies and Associate Professor of English at Lehigh University, in an effort to enhance our understanding on the civil rights leader’s work. —Souleo

Skip the objective. Objectives are outdated and rarely used in today’s world of professional resume writing. The purpose of the objective was to tell employers what you were seeking, i.e. “a challenging sales position.” Instead, the objective has now been replaced with a career profile or a summary of qualifications which tells employers exactly what you have to offer, i.e. “accomplished professional with 10 years sales experience.” Your resume should include a concise yet quality career profile which clearly indicates what you have to offer, rather than just what you desire. Employers are far more attracted to a candidate who actually brings something to the table.

Besides juicy tell-alls and gaudy fairy tale weddings, tabloids are always hungry for a celebrity newborn’s first photo opp… and they’re willing to pay up for a plate. However, unlike Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt who received a $4.1 million check from People in exchange for exclusive pics of their first biological daughter, Shiloh Nouvel, couples of color are rarely seduced by the media for six-figure (or more) shots of their tot. That could soon change however with the arrival of Beyonce and Jay-Z’s bundle of glory, Blue Ivy.

Although it’s unlikely that the ultra private couple (who have yet to even disclose a wedding photo) will pen a publication deal, many are speculating that the first snaps of their baby girl could pull anywhere from $3 million to $4 million. While we wait for the proud parents to ponder their decision, here’s a look at the few black and brown offspring that brought in big dollar signs before even uttering their first word.—Tracy Garraud

Well, it’s official. The new year is here. Like everything else in our rapid-fire world these days, with the flick of a switch (or drop of a big crystal ball in Times Square) all the anticipation, planning and counting down is suddenly over and then comes… the big let down. Because no matter how much we force feed it, bumper-sticker optimism and new resolutions, somehow, most new years just don’t feel all that new. In fact, chances are you dragged all your 2011 challenges into 2012. Doing more with less on the job? Check. Trying to still get a job? Check. Relationship stresses? Check. Wish you were in a relationship? Check. Owed too much money? Check. Feeling overwhelmed, underappreciated and out of whack? Check, check, and check! Let’s be real. Things don’t suddenly get better as one year changes into another anymore than they magically improve when a random tough Thursday becomes a freshly hatched Friday. Nothing becomes “new” unless we do. So, here are five surefire ways to make you feel, look and perform better, this new year. —Caroline Clarke
