3 Ways to Empower Yourself Outside the Office

“I’m here to serve humanity, to guide, to be a resource to help people,” says author, activist, publicist, and licensed clinical therapist Terrie Williams. “There are many people who helped me to get to where I am, so the only way I can do it is to help somebody else.”

A featured speaker at Black Enterprise’s 2015 Women of Power Summit, Williams is set to inspire and lead women to the personal power they need to find true success professionally. It’s something she’s done for more than 30 years. Beginning her career working with the likes of Comedian Eddie Murphy and jazz great Miles Davis, Williams represented both legends as a publicist when launching The Terrie Williams Agency.  She elevated her brand into producing Broadway shows like Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, and being the force behind the financing of businesses like Harlem, NY’s Hue-Man Bookstore. But Terrie’s brightest and most far-reaching power came when penning Black Pain:  It Just Looks Like We’re Not Hurting. Daring to share her story of fighting depression, the 2008 book opened a much needed dialogue on the overwhelming issue of mental health in the African-American community. Black Pain led to the national mental health advocacy campaign Sharing Ourselves…Healing Starts With Us,” a collaboration with the Ad Council’s and SAMHSA’s Campaign of Mental Health Recovery. As a speaker at the United Nation’s World Mental Health Day and member of the NCAA’s Mental Health Task Force, Terrie Williams continually seeks to heal and guide the world from darkness to light.

As she prepares to uplift ladies at the upcoming Women of Power Summit, Williams warms up by sharing 3 tips on how to empower oneself outside of work to find strength inside the office.

1. Know that your reputation is valuable. Know that it often reaches people before you do.  With that in mind, understand the importance of how you interact with people. Treat everyone you meet the same way–you never know who is in a position to help you.  Be sincere, be honest, be prepared, be professional, be thorough, be efficient — and deliver.

2. Pursue your dream. Be strong and go after your goals. All opposition will be taken care of.

3. Venture outside of your comfort zone. Step outside your comfort zone daily and understand that the butterflies inside mean you are taking your game to the next level. If you don’t get up with them, you are either going through this life being pathetic or you are flat lining.
