In addition to Apple trending online with a new smart watch and MacBook features, the tech company is also making a commitment to increase the pipeline of minorities in the technology industry.
With the goal of diversity in mind, the company is partnering with several non-profits on a multi-year, multi-million dollar effort to get more women, minorities and veterans in tech. One of these partnerships is with the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF), who supports students attending HBCU institutions across the nation.
“Historically, other organizations have provided scholarship dollars focused on whatever area matters most to them,” Johnny Taylor, president and CEO of TMCF tells Fortune. “What differentiates this partnership with Apple is that it hits on everything that we do –Â it is the most comprehensive program ever offered to an HBCU organization.”
With this partnership, Apple is committing more than $40 million to create a database of computer science majors at HBCUs, that train both students and faculty and offer scholarship opportunities. They are also creating a paid internship program for qualified HBCU students.
In addition to partnering with TMCF, the tech company is also partnering with the National Center for Women and Information Technology (NCWIT) to help increase the number of women in the industry.
“We wanted to create opportunities for minority candidates to get their first job at Apple,” said Denise Young Smith, who is the human resources chief at the company and also an alum of Grambling State University. “There is tremendous upside to that and we are dogged about the fact that we can’t innovate without being diverse and inclusive.”
