We have a number of people who are very deep in one area whether it’s math or demographics, however, to do a census you have to understand project management, budgeting, scheduling, and as we move through the process those disciplines actually become almost more important than the technical disciplines.

Karen Chambers, the director of product development for IMAN Cosmetics in New York City—and an ordained interfaith minister—had just finished her seminary thesis in May 2009, when her primary doctor called to tell her that she had diabetes. She was in disbelief. Chambers, then 41, had visited her physician for a routine checkup and believed feeling tired and over-extended was a natural result of managing both work and school. “I felt a bit lethargic but it’s kind of hard to tell whether that’s just life or something more serious,” says Chambers. “It absolutely shocked me. I was like, ‘Am I going to have to test my blood every day or stick my finger?’”

In his first three months in office, President
Barack Obama has transformed government into an activist tool that seeks to help American citizens recapture their share of the American dream. Not since Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal or Lyndon B. Johnson’s Great Society has an administration acted so boldly and swiftly to rebuild a nation. The result has been a mix of programs––the centerpiece of which is the $787 billion American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, commonly referred to as the stimulus package or bill, which intends to kick-start the economy by providing new jobs, tax breaks, and help for small businesses in addition to extending unemployment and health benefits. According to Recovery.gov, billions have already been dispersed to state and local agencies to engage in projects such as infrastructure repair, environmental cleanup, educational reform, and emergency assistance to disadvantaged families. In a conference call in March, White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel and Senior Advisor and Assistant to the President Valerie Jarrett asserted that citizens must be participants in the process and actively seek out programs and services that offer relief as well as opportunities. That’s why our editors developed this package. We want to provide a breakdown of initiatives for job seekers, homeowners and buyers, taxpayers, and small business owners.

Chef Leah Chase is credited within the culinary world as bringing Creole cuisine—a blend of African, Spanish, Caribbean, and French influences—to the front burner. For more than 60 years, locals, tourists, and notables alike (including President Barack Obama) have flocked to her New Orleans restaurant, Dooky Chase, to indulge in the signature local fare and catch Chase, 86, who is still a fixture in the kitchen. Chase has worked diligently to give back to the city of New Orleans and serves on the board of the New Orleans Museum of Art. Following Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, she helped rebuild a number of restaurants—including her own. black enterprise sat down with the feisty “Queen of Creole Cuisine” to find out how she inspires others to feast on the arts, why the country is starving for more black entrepreneurs, and how she continues to feed her appetite for life after all these years.
