MELVILLE, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say a fuel truck flipped and exploded on New York’s Long Island Expressway, killing the driver and creating a fireball seen for miles.
The fireball brought down a huge sign that hung over all eight lanes of the highway, shutting it in both directions for hours.
Authorities say the 18-wheeler clipped a car while trying to change lanes about 8 a.m. Saturday near the Nassau-Suffolk County line. A second person was injured.
Cleanup from the accident was expected to take hours, and authorities were uncertain late Saturday afternoon when the heavily trafficked highway might reopen. Rescuers were still trying to extricate the truck driver’s body Saturday afternoon.
