The Mystery of Swizz Beatz’s Connection to Megaupload
Last week, the Internet was abuzz with news about file-sharing Megaupload. First there was the news Megaupload was suing Universal Music Group in retaliation for a promotional video UMG blocked on YouTube. (It would later drop the suit against Universal.) Later in the week, the site was shutdown by the federal government and its founder Kim Dotcom and several others were arrested, brought up on charges of piracy.
While all of this was going on the New York Post inadvertently dropped a tidbit of celebrity misinformation that got the story get marquee placement on sites all over the Web–producer Swizz Beatz, husband of Alicia Keys was Megaupload’s supposed CEO. Days later VentureBeat contacted Megaupload’s top lawyer who denied that Beatz had any “meaningful” involvement in the business. If that was the case then where did this come from?
Well, BE Next learned of Beatz’s affiliation with the site last last year from sources close to him, claims of this connection were corroborated by Megaupload’s site itself which listed Kasseem “Swizz Beatz” Dean as the CEO on the site’s “about” page. Now adding a bit more confusion to the mix MTV News is reporting that an unnamed source close to Beatz is claiming that though he wasn’t officially CEO he was in talks to take the position but negotiations were still ongoing. As for his listing on the site as CEO the source tells MTV News that the listing was “premature” though despite the recent tumult Beatz is supposedly still interested in the position. BE Next is following this story and has made numerous attempts to contact Swizz Beatz’s camp to no avail.
