About LaToya Smith

LaToya Smith is the editorial assistant for BLACK ENTERPRISE magazine. She is responsible for editing the Letters column and the Backtalk column, which is a monthly Q&A with black “movers and shakers” and decision makers.

Smith joined BLACK ENTERPRISE in 2008 and has covered topics from personal finance and investing to special report pieces, including “What President Obama’s Economic Agenda Means for You.” During her short time with BE, Smith produced the online video, BE Next: Young, Fearless Entrepreneurs, as a companion piece to the January 2009 cover story. She was also the on-air talent in the video. Smith wrote the May 2009 cover story, “The Young and The Restless,” and co-wrote and co-produced the online video, which featured optimistic Gen Y investors eager to jump into the market and find bargains while stock prices are at historic lows.

Prior to joining BLACK ENTERPRISE, Smith was a statehouse reporter for The Lowell Sun, the Berkshire Eagle of Pittsfield, the Fitchburg Sentinel and Enterprise, and the Attleboro Sun-Chronicle newspapers in Boston, where she covered Massachusetts government and politics.

Smith has a bachelor of science degree in communications with a focus in broadcast, a bachelor of arts degree in history from Eastern Connecticut State University (magna cum laude), and a master of science degree in print journalism from Boston University.
