Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., an international, private, nonprofit organization, is slated to open an elementary school in Cherette, Haiti this month. The sorority is partnering with Water in Education International to provide a needed service to the country, which is still struggling to rebuild after the devastating earthquake of 2010. The school’s opening comes during a momentous year for the sorority, which celebrated their 100th Founder’s Day in January.

“The celebrations planned throughout our centennial year have not deterred us from doing what we were called to do—to serve,” said Delta Sigma Theta’s national president, Cynthia M. A. Butler-McIntyre.

The Water and Education International Student Collaboration for Haiti Outreach Opportunities for Learning (WEI SCHOOL) Project was established to provide an adequate school to include clean water for children in Haiti. The Delta Research & Educational Foundation will support the elementary school by providing funds that were donated by members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority in support of the Clean Water Haiti Fund, which was established in 2010. The funds are earmarked to support initiatives to provide clean water for Haitians impacted by the earthquake of January 2010.
