5 Interview Questions You’re Answering Wrong

You think you know, but you have no idea.

Have you ever been asked a question at an interview and been completely unsure of how to answer it? It gets even trickier when the question doesn’t seem to have an apparent wrong answer, but you’re sure it does—you just have no a clue what it is.

It becomes difficult to predict what’s expected. Is honesty the best policy, or should you rely on a more politically correct response? Will the acceptable—thus predictable—response make you seem inauthentic? Will the employer be turned off by you trying so hard to give them what you think they want? Are they hoping for the unexpected? What’s the right thing to do?

Business Insider has offered up the five best answers to those tricky interview questions that have you saying, “I thought I knew, but I had no idea.”

1. Why do you want to work here?

Wrong: “Well, I heard you guys were hiring so I figured, why not? It can’t be any worse than where I’m coming from, and if it is, I can always just look for something else. So, I figured this was worth a shot. Oh, and from what I hear, you guys pay more too.”

Right: “I think I can make a contribution here.”
This answer signifies that you want to be an active member of the team.

2. How does this position compare to the others you are applying for?

Wrong: “There are no others. It’s just me and you, boo.”

Right: “I have options, but I haven’t yet decided.”
This answer conveys that you’re honest, viable, and you’re able to stand your ground.

3. What would you do if you won $5 million tomorrow?

Wrong: “What type of question is that? I definitely wouldn’t be coming into work tomorrow, if that’s what you’re asking.”

Right: “I’d like to continue in my field somehow.”
This signifies your interest in working.

4. Have you considered being an entrepreneur?

Wrong: “Every day—if it means waking up when I am ready to and not answering to anyone, I’m all for it.”

Right: “I prefer being part of a team.”
This shows that you are thinking more in the present.

5. Why have you been out of work for so long?

Wrong: “Uhh…because no one has hired me yet.”

Right: “I’m looking for the most ideal fit.”
This answer shows personal initiative and drive.

Now you know! Go forth and be great.
