On Sept. 25, the Africa-America Institute (AAI), will host its 60th Anniversary Awards Gala in New York City during the opening week of the United Nations General Assembly. The organization will honor exemplary leaders in global business and philanthropy. In highlighting this milestone, the organization—which seeks to promote engagement between Africa and America through education, training and dialogue—kicks off its Career Expo: Inaugural Talent Summit on Sept. 21 at Hunter College.

“In celebration of our 60th anniversary, we are pleased to host anniversary activities that highlight AAI’s ongoing commitment to bolstering Africa’s human capacity for development,” says Amini Kajunju, president and CEO. “As AAI moves into a new era, the anniversary celebration will launch the new strategic vision and direction for AAI’s programming and engagement with more than 23,000 alumni.”

Honorees at the awards event include Tony Elumelu, Nigerian entrepreneur, philanthropist and chairman of Heirs Holdings Ltd., and Kandeh K. Yumkella, Ph.D., special representative of the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and CEO of Sustainable Energy for All Initiative. Corporate sponsors include Chevron, a Corporate Award honoree for its initiatives across Africa, Exxon Mobil and Shell.

At the organization’s talent summit, participants will learn from top industry leaders and experts about Africa’s employment and business landscape and get insight on international and regional hiring and transitioning into global job opportunities.

AAI was founded in 1953 by Horace Mann Bond, Ph.D., then president of Lincoln University, and William Leo Hansberry, a Howard University professor of African history, to support African students in their pursuit of higher education in the United States.
