If ever there was a time for community building and cultivation, that time is right now. Though the need to strengthen our communities is apparent, many are left wondering exactly what can be done or what role a single person can play to ultimately generate a lasting impact. Here’s a start—housing your hard earned money in black banks.

According to National Bankers Association (NBA) President, Michael Grant, “This is a movement that began over 100 years ago but had become dormant as a consequence of racial integration.  Thousands have been mobilized to protest with their spending power. Many African American consumers are linking the shootings with a sense of powerlessness, feeling undervalued and disrespected.”

Since Friday, July 8, thousands of checking and savings accounts have been opened at black-owned banks.

The following is a listing of all African American banks according to the NBA:

  1. ArtBen says:

Capital and credit formation receive very little attention in the black community. Many of the problems that we attribute to racism really stem from a lack of access to our own capital. If we would stop spending so much time complaining about lack of access to White capital and more time aggregating our own capital we could create more opportunities for ourselves.
