Welcome to the Style Suite with Kéla Walker, your source for fashion and style trends for power plays in the workplace. Every Tuesday and Thursday, she’ll share tips and suggestions to help maximize your style on a budget. Whether you’re the style devil in Prada or the apprentice with limited apparel, you’ll find something in the Style Suite to suit your needs.

As you know (and stressed several times here on the Style Suite) this season is all about great prints and rich bold colors in the wardrobe. That also goes for your lipstick. Yes, lipstick. Lip color in bold and luscious colors are all the the rage this season, adding an extra punch to your look.

If you are still a lip gloss girl or nude enthusiast, it’s time to up the ante and add some color to those smoochers. Everything from deep plums to dark berries to rich reds are gracing the lips of ladies everywhere. Like so many women, I kept my distance from color on my lips, wearing nude, nondescript shades for years, however this season I’m having a field day with all the great lip colors on the market. And the energy is infectious: the BE editors and I have been swapping pictures and color recommendations (Wine Not by Black Opal is one my favs). Bold colorful lips make a statement in your style and can be considered an accessory to your wardrobe. It’s also an easy and inexpensive way to experiment with your look. It’s one of the oldest tricks in the book: If you want to change your look or try something new and fun in fashion, try a new shade of lipstick.

I challenge you to take a trip this weekend to your favorite makeup counter and try out a few different shades. Take a picture of yourself in each color and make a decision on one or two to buy. Try wearing it for one week and I assure you, you wont think you can’t wear lip color any more.

And don’t think the more expensive the better. Drugstore brands wear just as well as those pricey ones. My favorite is Rite Aid because they’re one of the few drugstores that will refund used makeup products. If you don’t like it, just take it back. Have fun going bold in the office with a deep hued lip color!
