In 1994 Curtiss Pope's first job was as a grocery store clerk. Only 15, he couldn’t understand why there wasn’t a document to show customers which aisle had the bread and which aisle had the dairy. “I had to be well versed in the store layout,” remembers Pope. Fast-forward to 2008; Pope, now a software engineer, was on a grocery run with his wife when he got a spark of inspiration. He wanted to create a mobile app to help customers navigate their stores. That's exactly what he did. The app, AisleFinder, helps shoppers find their grocery items based on their shopping list. It also provides users with coupons and collects information about shoppers’ habits. Pope’s wife, along with several of his friends and family, thought it was a great idea and gave him moral support; along with $22,000. Unfortunately, the national grocery store chains didn’t feel the same way. It took a year and a half before Pope, and his four-person staff, were able to get a pilot deal with national grocery retailer, Safeway Inc. After a lot of coaxing the store agreed that starting this January they would endorse his app in 40 of their stores across California. Although AisleFinder still has a long way to go, Pope says that the deal with Safeway is already opening doors to other retailers. Here are his 10 tips for closing a deal with a national brand.

JULY 24, 2008: Detective Brian White and Joanne Kinney, an investigator from Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy's office, attempted to serve Bobby Ferguson with a subpoena while he was at the home of Kilpatrick's sister, Ayanna. Kilpatrick was there at the time and, along with his bodyguards, stopped the officers from entering the residence, which led to Kilpatrick allegedly pushing one of the sheriff's deputies. Kilpatrick later pled no contest to one felony count of assaulting and obstructing a police officer in exchange for a second assault charge being dropped. As part of the deal, he also agreed to resign from office and serve 120 days in jail.

COQUITO: PUERTO RICAN COCKTAIL "My family enjoys this drink every holiday season-- from Christmas to New Year's. It's tradition, so we don't do any festivities without it. And it's better than any eggnog!" -- Jessica Martinez, Human Resources & Corporate Operations Manager, Ingredients: 2 egg yolks, beaten; 1 (12 fl. oz.) can evaporated milk; 1 (14 oz.) can cream of coconut; 1 (14 oz.) can sweetened condensed milk; 1/2 cup white rum; 1/2 cup water; 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves; 1/2 tspn. ground cinnamon; 1 tspn vanilla extract Instructions: 1.) In the top of a double boiler, combine egg yolks and evaporated milk. (If you don't have a double boiler, you can simply use a heat-safe bowl over a regular pot); Stirring constantly, cook over lightly simmering water (in pot) until mixture reaches a temperature of 160 degrees. The mixture should be thick enough to coat the back of a spoon. 2.) Transfer mixture to a blender, and add cream of coconut, sweetened condensed milk, rum, water, cloves, cinnamon, and vanilla. extract. Blend for about 30 seconds. Pour into glass bottles, and chill overnight. When serving, sprinkle cinnamon on top or add stick for festive flavor. The Twitterverse is constantly buzzing with an outlined play-by-play on the latest in news, entertainment and trending topics—to name a few on the long list of online conversation starters. Twitter users are, in total, sending an average of 55 million tweets a day, according to a Twitter study released last April. Of course, with all that chatter it's easy to block out a lot of it, but within all the noise there's still a large percentage that catches your attention in one way or another. In an effort to make sure you're not missing out on the valuable commentary and comments online, BlackEnterprise.com will now curate the tweets throughout the week staffers think were worth taking note of, whether an expert, celebrity or or even you masterminded the tweet. Don't buy a product that doesn't meet your needs “It looks like a lot of the e-readers advertised on Black Friday sales are pretty good deals,” says Bradford. It is rumored that the Barnes and Noble Nook, which is usually $150 will be $99 just for Black Friday at Best Buy. “The only caveat is that it has WiFi and not 3G,” says Bradford. 3G is better because you can get an internet connection anywhere there is a cell phone signal, regardless of whether or not there is a WiFi signal. Also, the Nook gets free access to 3G and WiFi on AT&T’s network. “If WiFi is fine with you then that is a really good deal, says Bradford. “Most people aren’t going to need to download a book while standing out on a street corner.” But if downloading a book on the fly is your thing then you might want to spend more for 3G. Leading up to Black Friday stay informed about new models that are soon to be released. A lot of brands will be releasing newer models towards the end of this year and the beginning of the next year. If having the latest product is important to you, don’t buy an older version just because it is on sale.
