Mistake 3: Having a negative or arrogant attitude.

Seldom in life does anyone rise to the top without paying their dues first. No matter what level you’re at in your career, your job will probably include some form of menial tasks. “Chances are many of the tasks that make you mutter, ‘Why do I have to do this?’ won’t go away with your first (or second, or third) promotion,” Winters says. “Suck it up and realize that everything is a learning opportunity. Then, look forward to the parts of your job that you enjoy.”

Skip the objective. Objectives are outdated and rarely used in today’s world of professional resume writing. The purpose of the objective was to tell employers what you were seeking, i.e. “a challenging sales position.” Instead, the objective has now been replaced with a career profile or a summary of qualifications which tells employers exactly what you have to offer, i.e. “accomplished professional with 10 years sales experience.” Your resume should include a concise yet quality career profile which clearly indicates what you have to offer, rather than just what you desire. Employers are far more attracted to a candidate who actually brings something to the table.

Americans put a lot of value on job status. There are jobs that are revered for heroism—firefighters, soldiers—and others are heralded as the cornerstone of our society, such as educators. But the jobs that most admire with awe and envy are the “sexy jobs.” Positions that, from the outside looking in, appear to pay a pretty penny to live the life. They’re so appealing in fact that if you pay attention to any TV show or film there’s a good chance that one or all of the main characters have one of these “sexy jobs.” However, the luxurious lives associated with these gigs on screen don’t translate to real life, where oftentimes passion outweighs the paycheck. BlackEnterprise.com took a look at the actual earnings for these “sexy jobs” to see if the pay equaled the prestige. —Chloe Hilliard

Much of the employee scale-backs will come from Sony’s television business, according to reports, and roughly half of the job cuts will stem from recent deals, including the company’s sale of a chemicals company and the new joint operation with Hitachi and Toshiba.

For many women, a power look doesn't just end with the right outfit or shoe. It's a head-to-toe story of branding that tells who they are, what they do and how well they do it.

Putting that best face forward is important, whether they're closing deals, working with clients, traveling the world or starting that next venture. In today's image-conscious business world, make-up is no longer just for movie stars and glamour girls, as many working women recognize the importance of presence, accentuating their best features and embracing the power of femininity.

On the Real Housewives of Atlanta, we've all seen the drama and antics of six women interacting both professionally and personally to make must-see TV. But Attorney Phaedra Parks is not your typical reality TV diva. She's been managing law partner at The Parks Group, P.C., for a decade, and has represented the likes of Bobby Brown, Jermaine Dupri and Ludacris, among others.

The mother, entrepreneur, and litigator, was president of the Gate City Bar Association, and actively sits on boards for organizations including the American Bar Association and the University of Georgia. One can't have all of this under her (designer) belt without knowing a thing -- or three--- about networking.

THE MATCHMAKER: PAUL CARRICK BRUNSON

The Beginning: Known to many as the “real life Hitch,” Brunson says he's the only black male matchmaker in the U.S., among full-time professionals in the industry. In 2008, he was seeking business advice from a friend and decided to meet up with her at a matchmaking conference. At the time, his day job was working as a financial adviser. He never ended up meeting with his friend, but he did stumble upon an interesting discussion.

“There were about 250 matchmakers from all over the world---all blond women over the age of 40," he says. "It hit me: ‘Black people love too.’ ” Taking notice of the lack of diversity, Brunson decided to tap into a niche of his own.
