File Electronically Last year alone, 99 million people—70 percent of all individual taxpayers—used IRS e-file to electronically transmit their tax returns, according to the government agency. With electronic filing, you can literally submit your taxes up until the very last second without penalty. E-filing is an easy and cost-effective method to filing your taxes. Plus, it does the math for you. If you’re concerned about not knowing all the credits you qualify for, remember, most software programs have step-by-step instructions, which increases accuracy and the possibility of receiving a larger refund. Those with an adjusted gross income of $58,000 or less may be able to use the IRS’s Free File option, where taxpayers use online software donated by TurboTax and other tax agencies.

Have you ever searched Google, stood in line to purchase the latest iPhone, bought products on Amazon.com or bought plane tickets through Priceline.com? Have you shopped at the Gap, Banana Republic, or Old Navy or made purchases at CVS using your Visa or MasterCard? Do you plan to watch the Sunday football game on Fox Sports? Well, none of these companies value your consumer dollars enough to have African Americans sit on their board of directors.
The browning of America hasn’t extended into the boardrooms of some of America’s largest publicly traded corporations—a number that benefit from black consumers to gain market share.

In our research to create the black enterprise Registry of Corporate Directors, our listing of black board members from the 250 largest companies on the S&P 500, we discovered that 75 companies—30% —currently do not have any blacks on their boards including quite a few household names. We did not include Dell, which included former Congressman and UNCF President and CEO William H. Gray as a board member until his death in early July. And at presstime, Sprint Nextel and Softbank were in the process of completing merger talks.

As we developed the following list, our editors reached out to the executive offices or investor relations departments of every company with a series of e-mails and phone calls to gain explanations for the absence of black representation as well as the lack of recruitment effort. We found that 58 of these companies, however, failed to provide us with any response.

*We incorrectly identified Edison International as one of our “75 Companies Without Black Board Members.” In fact, Peter J. Taylor, executive vice president and chief financial officer of the University of California (UC) system, is an African American and has served on the board of directors of Edison International since December 2011.

We reveal whether African Americans have made significant progress 50 years after the March on Washington

As thousands travel to the nation’s capital to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom , we continue to grapple with the question of whether African Americans collectively has made significant progress worthy of Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s epic “I Have A Dream” Speech. It’s true African Americans no longer suffer the injustices of Jim Crow and that we have made significant political achievement – most notably, the election of America’s first African American president, Barack Obama, for two terms – but we still confront the nagging problems of poverty, unemployment and racism.

And the fact that such challenges continue to persist has never been more evident than the failure of a jury to hold George Zimmerman accountable for slaying Trayvon Martin as well as the Supreme Court’s decision in June to dismantle the 1965 Voting Rights Act. Revealing data compiled by the U.S. Census Bureau as well as information from the Pew Research center’s recent report on the economic, political and social status of African Americans, Black Enterprise – using the design talents of our Creative Director Terence Saulsby – provides a graphic snapshot of where we stand as a people today compared to that historic day in 1963. Have we realized the dream? You decide.

The differences between Black American then and now highlighted in our infographic.

With the last name Jones, there’s no question that success is literally right around the corner, at least that’s true in Hollywood. Quincy Jones is a multi-platinum record-winning producer, and has everything to show for it—including his family. While it may seem like a magic trick, as the Chicago-born legend spent much of his career traveling from country to country, he still made time to play father every now and then to his seven children—Jolie, Martina, Quincy III (QDIII), Kadida, Rashida, Rachel and Kenya.

All seven children didn’t walk behind their father into the walls of a recording studio, but they certainly found their way in and around Tinseltown. From super producer to super model, the Jones’ kids have pretty much done it all. And with their credits continually showing up on scores, albums, print ads and films, they’re not planning on stopping anytime soon. Leave it to this family, and they’ll be walking in space!
