Leading in to Oscars weekend, BlackEnterprise.com recognized 10 Black actors who have succeeded at the box office in films not originally written for a person of color. The article was a welcome reminder of how our star’s talent can triumph in Hollywood without falling into stereotypical characters. The only thing is all the examples were men. With March being Women’s History Month and having just wrapped our 6th Annual Women of Power Summit, BlackEnterprise.com decided to salute a few female thespians that have broken color and gender barriers on the silver screen.

Fans of the Knicks are ecstatic that their once proud franchise can now officially return to relevance. Lost in the uproar, however, is the potential economic surge this trade will likely have. What a difference a year makes. When the list of 2011 Academy Award nominees was announced last month, there was one glaring difference. Compared to last year’s contenders, which included Morgan Freeman for Invictus, Gabourey Sidibe for Precious and Mo’Nique who brought home the gold man for her portrayal in Precious, there was an obvious lack of people of color. Truth be told, the 2011 awards show represents the Whitest group of nominees in the major acting categories since the 73rd Oscars, 10 years ago.

This past Monday, the comic book, animation and entertainment worlds lost one of its legends with the passing of writer/producer Dwayne McDuffie. A true trailblazer, he helped redefine the image of African Americans through his multicultural characters and brands, which inspired a new generation of comic book writers, animators, illustrators and fans. Also, an entrepreneur, McDuffie—along with Denys Cowan, Michael Davis and Black Enterprise ’s own Derek T. Dingle—founded Milestone Media, Inc., the nation’s largest Black-owned comic book company. Despite his passing, McDuffie will live on in the hearts of his family and friends, but also through his impactful work. In continued memory of the fallen artist, BlackEnterprise.com pulled together a collection of some of McDuffie’s most popular characters to illustrate why he’ll always be our superhero.

Most may view Nicki Minaj as just another rapper/singer/performer; but the multi-faceted entertainer is much more than that, she’s a bankable brand that’s only just begun to blossom. In a few short years, Nicki has influenced trends through her music and unmistakable fashion sense, and her involvement in cosmetics, television, hair and even the floral industry (Nicki has exclusive pink collection bouquets available on flowers.com for Valentine’s Day) has helped spike sales and visibility for a number of ancillary brands. Mooz-Lum director Qasim Basir steps from behind the camera and into the spotlight (Press) A lot goes into making an independent movie. Beyond securing budgets (or the lack thereof), talent and equipment, it takes a lot of patience and perseverance to actually see a screenplay go from just words on a page to a finished reel. Still, the best most indie filmmakers can hope for are a few screenings on the film fest circuit and critical acclaim, but that wasn’t enough for writer/director Qasim “Q” Basir. Not only did Basir get to complete his first feature film, Mooz-Lum, but the 30-year-old Michigan native secured an all-star cast—including Nia Long, Danny Glover, Evan Ross, Roger Guenveur Smith and Dorian Missick—and a direct distribution deal with AMC Theatres for his independent picture. Promoted primarily through social media and word of mouth, Mooz-Lum, which took home Best Narrative Feature honors at last year’s Urbanworld Film Festival, garnered so much public support that Eventful reached out to Basir about distributing the film along with AMC, which is virtually unheard of for a non-mainstream project and a first-time feature director. “Eventful has worked with films that have been part of a studio and AMC has too,” Basir explains. “But there hasn’t been an independent film that’s had Eventful.com as a primary marketing partner and literally we open in the top 10 cities that demand the film.” Thanks to this groundbreaking distribution deal, Mooz-Lum, which tells the coming of age story of a young Muslim American man trying to find a balance between his faith and the secular world, opens today (February 11) in limited release. In the midst of drumming up moviegoer turnout for opening weekend, Basir sat down with BLACKENTERPRISE.COM to share tips for aspiring filmmakers looking to get their film on the silver screen. —Anslem Samuel

Not only did he recently release Super Rich: A Guide to Having it All, but the mogul (who is featured in the February 2011 issue of Black Enterprise) keeps his bookshelves jam packed with interesting reads. I took a peek while waiting for the crew to get the lights set for our Power Player interview with Simmons for the Black Enterprise Business Report and took note of what was there. Along with three Buddha statues, an ’80s hip-hop bobble head (complete with pseudo-Kangol and Adidas), a photo of his daughters, Ming Lee and Aoki Lee, with Oprah, and a bonsai tree that’s seen better days, Simmons’ office shelves offers a window into his soul—and his favorite reads. Entrepreneurs are known to have many qualities—persistence, leadership skills and a never-say-die attitude, to name a few. But even with those skills, even the most successful entrepreneurs have made their share of mistakes—and sometimes catastrophically. Robert Jordan, author of How They Did It: Billion Dollar Insights from the Heart of America (RedFlash Press $24.95) spoke with 45 successful entrepreneurs to gain an understanding of what it takes to successfully launch and grow a business. Among those featured is Joe Mansueto, founder of Morningstar, who sold the company for $2 billion, Raj Soin, who launched Modern Technologies Corporation (MTC) before selling it to BAE Systems for $425 million, and others who have taken their companies public in billion-dollar transactions. To be included in the book, they had to launch, grow and sell a company for approximately $100 million or go public for at least $300 million and had to be self-made, according to Jordan. “So the range ended up so that at the low end, Viresh Bhatia sold InstallShield for about $78 million and the high end was Dane Miller, who took Biomet private for $12 billion.” But what mistakes did these multi-millionaires make along the way and what can be learned from them? It’s time to get ready for the hottest Labor Day event around—the 17th annual Black Enterprise Golf & Tennis Challenge, Sept. 2-6 at the La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, California. But this year is going to be especially hot. Not because the West Coast will be experiencing a heatwave, but because it also happens to be Black Enterprise magazine’s 40th anniversary. So to celebrate, we invited a few friends to this year’s Challenge—friends like Ronald Isley & The Isley Brothers, El DeBarge, Big Daddy Kane, Doug E. Fresh, and MC Lyte. They’re all coming through to make this Labor Day weekend one you won’t forget. DeBarge, a pop and R&B group made up of talented siblings, got heavy airplay on the radio throughout the 80s. El DeBarge—big brother to Chico, who performed at last year’s Golf & Tennis Challenge—was the group’s lead singer. He made songs like “All This Love,” “Rhythm of the Night,” “You Wear it Well,” and “Who’s Johnny?” instantly recognizable hits.
