In 1983 amateur boxer Dewey Bozella was accused and later convicted of a murder he didn’t commit. It took 26 years in New York’s notorious Sing Sing prison before his name could be cleared. Now a free man, Bozella, 52, finally got the chance to live out his dream of being a professional fighter when he stepped into the ring on October 14 and went against 30-year-old fighter, Larry Hopkins, at Los Angeles’ Staples Center. Against all odds, Bozella not only finished the fight but won against an opponent 22 years his junior. The redeemed pugilist ended the evening saying, “Don’t ever give up.” In light of Bozella’s determination and story of redemption, BlackEnterprise.com takes a look at seven notable figures that were able to find success despite carrying the stigma of being formerly incarcerated. —Amber McKynzie

Each year some of the culture’s greats descend upon Atlanta, Georgia for the BET Hip-Hop Awards.  This year’s gathering was no different as a who’s who of hip-hop celebrities, as well as industry experts and avid fans, gathered to highlight the accomplishments of the trendsetters and trailblazers. DON’T FORGET TO SHOWCASE YOUR WORK

“Hit the film festival circuit,” LaMothe says flatly. A lot of filmmakers attract notoriety and investors by showcasing their projects at the various film fests that are held annually. You don’t have to attend them all but having a presence can be the springboard you need to get your work out there. “If you have something that resonates with people, and just stands out, it’ll get its attention,” he ads. “It’ll get its due, which of course will help you move forward with your next project.”

Facebook, Kickstarter, Demand It and other social media platforms have created a viral movie-loving audience, making 2011 an explosive year for the independent Black filmmaker. Online options are proving fruitful for movie producers with their backs against the wall and no distribution deals on the table. PR icon, Ava DuVernay used $50,000 of her own money to produce and release her film, I Will Follow, independently through AMC Independent after a social campaign couldn’t contain the demand for more Black films. First-time filmmaker, Qasim Basir, wrote and independently produced Mooz-lum, which he released domestically last February and beat out films like Justin Bieber: Never Say Never in per screen earnings. With the International Black Film Festival of Nashville declaring October Black Movie Month, BlackEnterprise.com highlights 10 of the top-grossing independent Black films. —Darralynn Hutson

Princeton, Harvard, Cornell, Dartmouth, Brown, Yale, Columbia and UPenn all have the distinction of being named Ivy League institutions of higher education. Since February 1954 these eight universities have been heralded for their academic excellence and standout athletic achievements. Almost 60 years later, those institutions are still recognized as the most prestigious centers of higher learning nationwide. While the general train of thought would be that the Elite 8 would solely produce cerebral types, some of today’s most notable and creative African American celebrities have walked their hallowed halls as well. MARVIN GAYE, 44: A Motown legend and gifted songwriter, Gaye racked up an impressive musical catalogue of timeless hits records that ranged from political commentary to love ballads to poetic soul that touched millions of fans. Having several bouts with drugs and depression throughout the years, Gaye’s personal demons got the better of him when he and his father got into an altercation on April 1, 1984 that led to the legendary singer’s death from a fatal gunshot wound. Gaye died just one day shy of his 45th birthday.

It took only 72 days for Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries’ marriage to dissolve. Reportedly costing a million dollars, the financial loss of the split is obvious. Similarly, Jennifer Lopez may have once sang “Love Don’t Cost A Thing,” but the singer/actress knows first-hand that a divorce can cost a pretty penny. After eight months of marrige to backup dancer/choreographer Cris Judd, she called it quits in 2002 and coughed up $14 million to Judd. With the recent announcement of her split from salsa singer Marc Anthony, there’s rampant speculation about who’s going to come out richer. J.Lo, whose estimated net worth is $150 million, easily eclipses her estranged husband who earns a respectable $40 million. If the couple signed a premarital agreement, there should be little worry about who gets what. On the other hand, the dirty laundry from some of the following couples was aired when news of their divorces spread. We’ve taken a look at the figures in 10 expensive celebrity divorces. —Brett Johnson

In August 1991, Prince inked a $100 million deal with Warner Bros., making him the highest-paid artist at the time. The deal included two joint record companies as well as a vice president post for him. In 1993, the pop and rock icon would become "the Artist Formerly Known as Prince" during a legal battle with the label over artistic and financial control of his music. After a long, highly publicized battle, in which he began performing in protest using only a symbol as his name, he was able to gain release from the contract, serving as one of the most prolific public examples of an artist's success in standing up for his artistic beliefs and financial due.

It’s a known fact that a celebrity’s career rarely includes only one single job. Any multi-faceted entertainer—be it actor, artist, or both—learns fairly quickly that the key to climbing the success ladder is through constant diversification. Making money in various markets guarantees a well-rounded (and long-lasting) career. With the fickle tastes and short attention spans of most audiences, it’s only necessary to jump into multiple roles, bulking up pockets and fan bases equally. Many artists have made the migration from musicians to actors, film producers, authors and all around entrepreneurs. Such transitory career goals have allowed many artists to garner successes they never achieved during their time solely working as musicians. As part of our continued Black Music Month coverage, BlackEnterprise.com has compiled a list of 11 celebs that started out as artists and have since evolved into well-oiled self-entities. —Kathy Iandoli

Before reality TV took over, cable networks like BET, MTV and VH1 (along with an assortment of broadcast programs) used to dedicate hours to airing music videos. Now, there are only a handful of such shows around and fans are more likely to watch their favorite artist’s latest clip online than on TV. With that said, the quality and concepts for most musicians have gone down. Gone are the days of the multi-million dollar video shoot that was more than a lip-syncing affair and produced mini movies. Still in the midst of Black Music Month, BlackEnterprise.com takes a trip down memory lane with some of the most expensive music videos made by African American artists. You’ll also discover which famous family has a penchant for not only making records but breaking them (and budgets) as well. —Anslem Samuel

This past Friday, June 24, same-sex marriages were made legal in New York, continuing conversations in the media and within many homes about the subject. While some are celebrating and making wedding plans others are protesting, as the hot political debate continues. The notion of being Black and openly gay—especially in the entertainment industry—remain controversial and traditionally hush-hush, with many artists choosing to remain in the closet. In light of Black Enterprise’s upcoming Black & Gay in Corporate America cover story [on stands July 19] and BlackEnterprise.com’s continued Black Music Month coverage, we’ve highlighted a few celebrity entertainers who are out and proud. —Janell Hazelwood

Even before the 2011 NBA Finals got in to full swing, there was talk of who had the best shot at winning the championship this year. Following his “decision” to leave his hometown of Cleveland to join Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh on Miami’s big stage, LeBron James made sure his name part of the discussion. He’s already considered one of the best players to play the game on a professional level today, but a ring would solidify that point even further—or would it? The world of sports is filled with dominant competitors that never won a title. In fact, BlackEnterprise.com compiled a list of 10 NBA greats that dominated the sport but failed to take home the big prize. A few still have a shot.

Just as the U.S. auto industry was expected to return to the fast lane, following the worst economic recession since the Great Depression, certain segments could be brought to a screeching halt this summer. With Japan’s recent earthquake affecting new-vehicle production both here and abroad, coupled with the civil unrest in the Middle East—which is driving up gas prices to unprecedented levels—many consumers in the market for a new (or used) ride over the next few months are in for a bumpy ride. All work and no play can make for a dull day at the office, but being productive is what matters most to employers. While having a jovial co-worker that can lighten the mood in the workplace can be a plus, he or she can wind up being a major distraction when there’s a tight deadline looming. The last thing any effective team needs is an internal distraction, be it a talkative co-worker or an unfocused one. Jonathan Smith, better known as Lil Jon, knows firsthand how detrimental a distracting co-worker can be to working efficiently and effectively. For the past several weeks, he and fellow Celebrity Apprentice cast mates had to deal with the always-erratic Gary Busey, who would constantly interrupt, confuse and undermine his team’s progress during each assigned task. With the frustrating actor finally “fired” in last night’s episode, BlackEnterprise.com caught up with Lil Jon to get his tips on dealing with a distracting co-worker (named Gary Busey).

Some only know Stanley "MC Hammer" Burrell for his Grammy award-winning legacy as a pioneering performer in hip-hop and pop culture. Others remember him more for his infamous financial woes and stints on reality TV. But don't put this entrepreneur and social media advocate in a box. He's kept the superstar momentum going in recent years with his dance community Web portal, DanceJam, and the founding of Alchemist Management, a mixed martial arts management company. Hammer's also reinvented himself as a social networking mogul (with more than 2 million Twitter followers), carving out yet another niche in his diverse career with high impact and visibility. An avid reader and sought-after speaker—having lectured at Oxford and Wharton and will be speaking this year at Black Enterprise's Entrepreneurs Conference in Atlanta (May 22-25), Hammer knows a thing or two about expanding one's knowledge of how to connect with audiences and use technology as a lucrative tool. BlackEnterprise.com caught up with the social media whiz on his favorite book picks for social media success.

Evolving in the public eye, Chris Brown has gone from teenaged heartthrob to pop music megastar to vilified brute and then repentant sinner. At the heart of his image downturn is the 2009 assault of then girlfriend, Rihanna, which showed a darker side to the talented singer/dancer/actor. Brown’s subsequent apologies, paid debt to society in the form of community service and an emotional performance of Michael Jackson’s “Man In The Mirror” at the 2010 BET Awards seemed to have almost wiped his slate clean—that is, until last month’s Good Morning America appearance. Following an awkward and defensive interview with GMA co-host Robin Roberts, Brown threw a tantrum backstage, smashing a window at ABC’s Times Square studio in the process. Though Brown has since apologized for his behavior (again), many speculate that he’s running out of second chances and that’s bound to hit him in the pockets. BlackEnterprise.com takes a look at how all the drama has or hasn’t affected the troubled star’s money.

Best known for his portrayal of Tee Tee on BET’s The Game, Barry Floyd earned his position in the spotlight the hard way. With ambitions of being a writer, the Philadelphia native headed to Hollywood to follow his dreams, but like many aspiring scribes, he saw those dreams deferred. Following a string of production assistant jobs on such TV series as Cuts, Everybody Hates Chris and Girlfriends, Floyd fell into acting when one of the Girlfriends performers was late for rehearsal and he was asked to stand in. Impressed with his performance, the casting director suggested Floyd audition for a part on an upcoming show called The Game. “I had no intention of acting,” he explains. “I was just in the right place at the right time.” During the course of the show’s inaugural run on The CW network, Floyd sharpened his acting skills, earning more camera time in the process. Now, at the close of the sitcom’s resurrected season on BET, the actor is refocused on his initial goal, working as the head writer on the online sketch comedy series, Purple Stuff TV. Managing to navigate his way through the bright lights of Tinseltown, Floyd shares a few of his trade secrets with BlackEnterprise.com.
