RAISE ENOUGH MONEY BEFORE OPENING FOR BUSINESS

Redding opened up Amy Ruth’s in 1998 with a $73,000 investment and it went on to become a $3 million company. While that achievement is to be lauded, under further inspection it should also to be avoided because Redding launched his business undercapitalized, a trend that he believes is all too common for many African American-owned businesses. “As Black people we always end up opening businesses underfunded,” he notes. “Due to that we rob Peter to pay Paul and don’t pay taxes or purveyors or utilities. Redding knew that opening his latest restaurant would mean securing enough funding—$2 million to be exact. The only way he was able to achieve that round of fundraising was by revising his business plan, something that he recommends for every entrepreneur looking to start over. “You have to put your new business together with a solid business plan so that you can get proper funding.”

How to Hide Stuff From Your Timeline

Timeline gives friends the ability to view your entire Facebook history. For this reason, we imagine the first thing most people will want to do is to "sanitize" their Timeline. The good news is, it's simple to hide what you don't want showing. When you see a post you'd like to nix, just hit the pencil icon at the top of the post and select "Hide from Timeline." This doesn't delete the content from your account, but it will keep it safe from prying eyes.

Be ready for business!

When publicity strikes, you may get a surge in foot traffic or web traffic. If you have a brick and mortar business, get ready by bringing on extra temporary staff, and ordering extra product. Get your web site ready by creating landing pages and email captures so you can keep in touch with all of your new customers even after they've come and gone. Offer a coupon for new e-mail list subscribers, then send over your newsletter and let them know what's new with your business each month.

7 Simple Ways to Get Your Business Ready for Publicity

If you’ve attended a conference, you most certainly have experienced an elevator pitch. Whether you’re waiting in line for a cab, at a bar, or…yes, in an elevator, someone has most likely approached you to talk about their startup or latest venture. However, pitching is an art, and not everyone has nailed it. So not surprisingly, the ballroom at the Hilton Austin was packed with aspiring entrepreneurs at the “3 Steps to a Killer Elevator Pitch” panel during South by Southwest Interactive.

The elevator pitch is a simple concept: If you were stuck in an elevator with someone, what would you say to promote your company in the time that the elevator closes until the time you get to your floor? In theory you have around 90 seconds to make a successful pitch, but how can you create a cohesive, effective pitch in that short amount of time?

According to Joshua Baer, a startup mentor and director at Capital Factory, there are three simple steps in effective pitching:--Winston Ford

Establish a Google Plus Account

The online world is buzzing with new social networks updating almost every day and new ones being created just as fast. With that said, every entrepreneur should seriously consider Google Plus. It’s not just a source to create another social network profile but a great tool to engage your end customers with business-ready tools like, Google Hangout and Google Circles, among other things. Also, brand your Google Plus account by securing a customized URL at gplus.to (i.e. gplus.to/hajjflemings is my handle.) Note: This is just a branding tool that you can use to communicate your Google Plus URL in a neat fashion. In the future Google will enable customized URLs for Google Plus accounts.

I've been exploring social media's latest runaway site – Pinterest*, a virtual bulletin board that allows users to share images, objects, and links they find interesting or inspiring. While, personally, I enjoy pinning photos of stylish outfits, chic MacBook and iPad cases, and outtakes from home décor magazines, I see the value this platform has for brands. When it comes to my brand, I’ve taken a thought leadership approach— just check my "Essential Books" board to see what branding, social media and marketing books I’m reading. This user-friendly platform is already proving to be valuable for businesses.
There’s serious potential to drive sales for business owners. Getting images of your products pinned and repinned can literally drive customers to your door step. At the very least, it will drive traffic to your website where customers can request your service.

I talk to stressed out business owners and non-profit leaders almost every day who are just plain overwhelmed with social media. Not because they don't know how to use it and not because they don't understand its value. They're stressed because the space changes at such a rapid pace---the ground is always shifting under their feet so they never really feel like they're gotten a foothold.

So what do you do to keep up with social media while running your business? It's impossible to get on every platform and more importantly, it's just not smart. You can't do that, so don't even try. Instead of focusing on quantity of social connections and sites, focus more on quality control. Here are 6 ways to do it.---Amanda Miller Littlejohn

When chef and proprietor Carl Redding decided to establish the Harlem restaurant named after his grandmother, Amy Ruth’s in 1999 he didn’t foresee it becoming a multimillion-dollar company that he would one day no longer lead. Yet, that is exactly what happened when he was forced to sell the restaurant four years ago due to financial mismanagement, which led to tax debt. After relinquishing power Redding made two more efforts in the culinary business with Ruthie Mae’s in Englewood, NJ, which lasted only seven months, and Doc’s, a take-out soul food spot in Harlem that was also short-lived. These disappointments may have convinced any other entrepreneur to quit but it only made Redding’s resolve to succeed stronger. Finally, he has managed to do just that with Redding’s, a popular soul food attraction in Atlantic City, NJ that recently celebrated its one-year anniversary. Mr. Redding’s latest achievement wasn’t easy and now he shares with BlackEnterprise.com his most significant tips for any businessperson intent upon making a comeback. —Souleo

While small business loans slid 4.1% from 2009 to 2010, there was still some $310 million extended in 2010. So while credit may be tight, capital is out there. But what do banks look for these days before extending a loan? “I think a lot of people seem to have the impression that banking is rocket science,” says Douglas Dillon, Senior Vice President of Commercial Lending for Industrial Bank (No. 8 on the BE BANKS list with $382 million in assets). “I’m not of that impression.” He says banks look at the following five criteria before extending a business loan. —Alan Hughes

Change Has to Be Authentic

The legacy of the Soul Train brand is built upon the pillars of dance, music and fashion. For Gibbs every brand has its own set of values, which must be expanded upon without compromising integrity. “Consumers now are savvier than ever and you have to be authentic and deliver to them what your brand value is unless of course you are looking to change that,” he says. Gibbs’ strategy includes honoring Soul Train’s musical past while reflecting contemporary pop culture. “Music is our lane but that doesn’t mean we can only show artists that were a part of the iconic past. Our perspective is that Soul Train is and will continue to be the home to the biggest artists in popular music,” he says. “We want to contemporize and reach a subset of our consumer, which is a younger consumer—with the rebirth of the brand.”

Seeking perfection in today’s business world is not a successful business strategy. This does not mean that the need for excellence, great customer service, and preparation and planning has to be left to chance. However, when you don't fixate on perfection it means you can move forward with a business idea without waiting until all elements are exactly right.

Don't get caught up in the Perfection Trap: the illusion that everything has to be just right before you will launch. It often serves as an accelerator that moves you beyond what is needed and keeps you from working smarter. It freezes you into over-thinking everything and talking yourself out of even starting. The other problem with trying to achieve perfection is that it is really a moving target.

Here are three Perfection Traps and how you can free yourself from their grip. ---Sheri Riley
