Whether you’re stateside or abroad, social media has made our world a lot smaller. Last week’s Social Media Week (SMW) events and conversations, many of which took place on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, to name a few platforms, are proof that geographic borders can’t contain the flow of ideas in the digital age.

With the dust slowly settling on SMW Lagos, which made its debut in Africa last Monday, BlackEnterprise.com is highlighting power women in Africa who have made a sizeable social impact. These women were selected for their influence and position in their respective industry, relevance within their field or due to their promising future.

Fill it out NO matter what Never second-guess your decision to fill out the FAFSA. Regardless of your family’s income, filing out the document qualifies you to receive various forms of financial assistance. According to a Minnesota Office of Higher Education report, in 2007-2008, of the 8.4 million students who did not file a FAFSA, an estimated 2.3 million students were estimated to have an Expected Family Contribution (EFC)—the amount of money one’s family is expected to pay toward his/her college education per year—that would have made them eligible for a federal Pell Grant, with 1.1 million potentially qualifying for a full Pell Grant.

With 87 million women between the ages of 18 and 76 years old online, and another 69 million using social media on a weekly basis, according to BlogHer’s Social Media Matters study, it’s fair to say women run the world web. It’s one of the reasons social media influencer Ananda Leeke founded the Digital Sisterhood Network. The “Jill of Many Trades” (she’s a lawyer-turned-author, as well as an artist, coach, innerpreneur, yoga instructor, among other things) sparked a movement that consists of a national and international following; an entire month dedicated to women in social media, Digital Sisterhood Month, which takes place in December. There’s also a weekly celebration on Twitter and Facebook, entitled #DigitalSisterhood Wednesdays, geared toward shouting out your network and igniting meaningful conversation. As the organization’s designated month comes to a close, Digital Sisterhood announced the 2012 Digital Sisters of the Year. The Digital Sisterhood 100 is comprised of seven categories: Creativista, Empirista, Empowerista, Enchantista, Evangelista, Flowista, and Lifestylista. Take a look at who made the list: --Janel Martinez

DON’T FORGET REAL FANS FUND FILMS

Getting support for a film is much easier in our digital world. LaMothe suggests aspiring filmmakers reach out for fan support through sites like Kickstarter. “It’s a Website designed for filmmakers who are seeking funding for films,” he says. “[It] seems to be filling out very well for a lot of independent filmmakers. Basically it allows your average filmgoer, contributing their 25 cents or whatever amount of money they want, to contribute by putting a budget in the timeline. With those budgets you can hopefully seek some form of funding for your film.”

No. 6: Computers and Mathematics. Recent graduates with a degree in computers and mathematics are at an unemployment rate of 8.2%. However, the study found that unemployment in this field varies depending on the major's technical and scientific content. Jobs will still be available for technical computer specialists who have the ability to write software and create new applications. Unfortunately, specialists who use software to manipulate, mine, and relay information will have a tough time getting a job during a recession. Those who invent computer technology will be in greater demand than those who use computer technology.

Privacy continues to be one of the top issues in sharing content on social networks. Recently, Facebook announced their new privacy settings and the redesign they are rolling out soon. Users started seeing the new privacy changes to the Web version Thursday, and the mobile roll-out of changes will happen soon after. An interesting question is what is driving the new Facebook privacy changes? Is it Google Plus or the need to provide users with a more contextual experience? The launch of Google Plus has intensified content-sharing privacy with their Google Circles functionality. The friendly competition with Google will hopefully continue to provide changes that will benefit the user. The other big plus is that these adjustments enable users to manage their profiles, which represent and reflect a portion of their online identity. ---Hajj Flemings

Backed By the Tech Community

With promises of tax breaks and a laissez-faire approach to regulation, many in the tech community favor Romney. In a recent poll, 64% of chief executives, CFOs and other company officers at tech companies as well as venture capitalists, tech entrepreneurs and consultants felt a Romney administration would be more prosperous to their industry.

Well-known venture capitalist and Facebook investor Marc Andreessen has contributed more than $100,000 to the Romney campaign. He’s also been victorious in tapping Silicon Valley heavyweights for super PACs. We’re talking key tech backers such as chief executive of Hewlett-Packard Meg Whitman; Howard Cox, advisory partner at the venture capital firm Greylock Partners; and early Facebook investor Peter Thiel, who gave over $4 million to conservative super PACs this year.

Hundreds applied to the FOCUS100 Pitch-It Competition, but only four made the cut. These four promising start-ups founded/co-founded by black women proved to be the main attraction, not only because of their live products, but because of their experience, education, passion, and business acumen under pressure. All of the winners received coaching sessions with Jeanne Sullivan of Starvest Partners and Lauren Maillan Bias of Gen Y Capital. But only one stood victorious. The winner walked away with:

- Finalist status for TechStars NYC 2013 session

- A Non-Pitch Meeting with Andreessen Horowitz, and

- A Meeting with Comcast Ventures.

In the tech industry, less than 1% of founders who have received venture capital funds are African American. Black women compose only a fraction of that 1%. The one thing many of these women had in common was the passion and drive to create their own dream, and become employers in today’s high-growth innovation economy.
