STEM Careers

Education is important for the jobs of the future so Obama’s election-year initiative will ensure the next generation of African Americans will be prepared. The president has already made STEM education a key priority with initiatives like Race to the Top and the “Educate to Innovate” campaign. With growth in STEM jobs three times greater than that of non-STEM jobs over the last 10 years, it’s an area of opportunity for future jobseekers. Throughout the next decade, STEM occupations are projected to grow by 17%, compared to nearly 10-percent growth for other occupations.

When it comes to social networking sites, LinkedIn is not viewed as one of the most exciting platforms (thanks to the ability to “pin,” “tweet” and “Facebook” nearly any aspect of life), but it is definitely one web-based network you should invest your time in. In fact, there’s a bevy of functions that are raising the stakes, allowing professionals to stay connected with others in and outside of their spheres of influence, access applications and remain up to date on the latest career-related news. Mashable outlines five capabilities you should familiarize yourself with and maximize on LinkedIn:

A Lifelong History: It used to be acceptable to chronologically list every job you ever had on your resume. However, today’s hiring managers are more concerned about the relevance of your experience rather than the length of your experience. For an experienced professional, listing your first job out of high school isn’t really necessary unless it’s the only job you’ve ever had. While 10 years of work history is the standard, it’s okay to list older experience if it is relevant.

ADD ALL YOUR SOCIAL PROFILES, ESPECIALLY FACEBOOK

Everyone has a Klout score automatically generated from Twitter, which serves as the primary account. Up to 12 social media profiles can be linked to your account, with at least 6 more being added in the near future. Including more profiles creates a clearer picture of your brand’s total social impact, especially if your strongest platform is not Twitter.

Tip: Adding Facebook significantly improves your score, more than adding other platforms.

CREATE BALANCE IN YOUR LIFE: This is something I’m still working towards. I’ve been an entrepreneur since I was 16 years old, and only in recent years have I started to understand what true balance means. I have a very big family (five siblings, 60+ cousins…) and spending time with them is very important to me. The concerts, recitals, graduations, impromptu card games…all of these moments are important to me, and there’s no business success that can replace these moments. Besides spending time with your family, find special things to help you balance yourself. For me it’s definitely prayer and journaling. When we quiet ourselves, sometimes we’re blessed with brilliant ideas.

Harnessing the power of social for social good was a major trend and point of discussion among conscious techies and seasoned panelists during Social Media Week 2012. We’ve seen how quickly platforms can be used to mobilize reform efforts thanks to social media’s influence in the Arab Spring and recent Occupy Movement. Digital thought leaders have no doubt that, when used properly, social media can be a significant cultural unifier, connecting people and efforts despite location.
Moderated by Alice Korngold of Korngold Consulting LLC, "Social Media for Social Good"—an hour-long panel discussing best practices to use when furthering a cause in the digital space—wasn’t short of generating great ideas. The panelists included Cheryl Heller, board chair at PopTech; Dan Savage, creator of the It Gets Better Project; President and COO of Digitaria Doug Hecht and Carmel Hagan of Common. Here’s how social media enthusiasts can use various platforms for social good:--–Noni Cavaliere

As smart phone manufacturers go, the men and women at Samsung must be geniuses because the Galaxy S series keeps getting better and better. The Galaxy S3 has so many great features it's hard to say where to start. There's the 4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED touchscreen display, and the multitask feature that lets you continue to watch a video while texting, but the S Beam has got to be the best feature in my book. It allows you to place two S3's back-to-back and you can transfer pictures, music, videos and more.

It might be a little difficult to recall life without web search giant Google, Inc., but the Mountain View, Calif.-based corporation popped up on the tech scene just 14 years ago—and hasn’t looked back. No. 6: Computers and Mathematics. Recent graduates with a degree in computers and mathematics are at an unemployment rate of 8.2%. However, the study found that unemployment in this field varies depending on the major's technical and scientific content. Jobs will still be available for technical computer specialists who have the ability to write software and create new applications. Unfortunately, specialists who use software to manipulate, mine, and relay information will have a tough time getting a job during a recession. Those who invent computer technology will be in greater demand than those who use computer technology.

I’ve been involved in the Republican Party for most of my adult life and continue to be amazed at the lack of interest the party shows toward the Black community. Those who have followed my writings over the years know that I have been extremely critical of the party regarding this issue. But, I have been even more critical of the individuals the party chooses to showcase as the face of Black Republicans. I find many of these individuals to be an embarrassment to me as a person of color, as well as to the Republican brand. Many of the Black faces that are trotted out in front of the cameras have absolutely no connection to the Black community.

Despite public perception there are Black Republicans who possess both political and policy expertise that the party could and should tap in to. They exemplify the best of Republican values and thoroughly understand the need for the party to be more diverse. Here are some influential Black Republicans that most folks have never heard of but should. —Raynard Jackson

Consistency will seal the deal

Bloggers, you want to make sure the brand you’d like to work with knows this is more than a hobby; hence, it starts with consistency. Create a content calendar. If you are going to be traveling, schedule posts to go live in your absence. Brands want to know you’re not going to let the ball drop.

Try renting instead of buying. “The easiest way to save big when students head back to school is by renting textbooks through a program like Rent-A-Text,” suggests Ellie Kay, author of The Little Book of Big Savings. Sites like BookRenter.com, CollegeBookRenter.com and Rent-a-Text.com have been popping up ever since Congress added some textbook-affordability provisions to the Higher Education Opportunity Act in 2008. These websites allow you to rent a book for a flat fee and then return it at the end of your semester, save you anywhere from 50% to 80% off the costs.

Come the end of this month, the Olympics will be played out for all to see on NBC, but social-savvy fans and sponsors are set to connect with audiences on various social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. (Not to mention, NBCOlympics.com will live stream every single event and the network will provide two different apps for mobile devices.) With nearly everyone toting a smartphone, the main sporting event will spark record-level engagement on popular social networking sites; it’s not a conversation everyone had access to during previous Olympic games. Web access has increased greatly since the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing, China. According to the International Telecommunications Union, there were approximately 1.5 billion Internet users worldwide (23% of the world’s total population). By July 27, that number will jump to about 2.3 billion users—an average of 33% of the total population. With the games fast approaching, Mashable outlined how the popular networks stack up today:

New Siri Features

I love the current Siri TV ads by Apple, and, quite frankly, it is the only place the personal assistant software seems to work. All jokes aside, it will be interesting to see Siri on new iPad. Here are some of its enhanced functions:
--Users will be able to post Facebook updates and send tweets with their voice.

--Siri has partnered with Yelp, OpenTable, Rotten Tomatoes, and sports score updates ranging from the latest scores to stats and schedules.

--The software assistant will continue expanding globally with its new language support, which will now feature Spanish, Italian, Korean, Mandarin and Cantonese, and optimize languages in 15 countries.

Apple is working with automotive manufactures to launch “Eyes Free,” a new feature that will allow a car to bring up Siri voice control. Nine auto manufacturers such as Audi, BMW, Jaguar and Toyota are working on this implementation with plans to incorporate the technology in the next 12 months.

Since its 2008 launch, Klout has been praised as a helpful tool for social influence, and criticized on score inconsistencies all in the same breath. Technology blogger Diego Basch summed it up best: “It’s simply a game that measures how good you are at it. Your Klout score measures how good you are at getting a high Klout score.”

While Klout maintains that their "True Reach" metric is a work in progress, it’s hard not to view the number as the end-all, be-all of one’s digital influence. It matters so much so that companies are using the scoring system to decide whether or not they’ll employ an individual. Sam Fiorella’s job interview was cut short when he admitted to not knowing about Klout. After the dismissal, Fiorella spent the next six months working to boost his Klout score, ultimately reaching 72. With interactive influence determining whether or not you’ll land your next job (or VIP status at an upcoming event), here are 5 tips to boosting your Klout score in 5 days.--Terrena Carriman

Establish a Google Plus Account

The online world is buzzing with new social networks updating almost every day and new ones being created just as fast. With that said, every entrepreneur should seriously consider Google Plus. It’s not just a source to create another social network profile but a great tool to engage your end customers with business-ready tools like, Google Hangout and Google Circles, among other things. Also, brand your Google Plus account by securing a customized URL at gplus.to (i.e. gplus.to/hajjflemings is my handle.) Note: This is just a branding tool that you can use to communicate your Google Plus URL in a neat fashion. In the future Google will enable customized URLs for Google Plus accounts.

TWITTER: I know that this is probably an obvious one, but how do you really engage with Twitter? Do you use it as a personal tool to connect with others? Promote your business? Both? Do you need a personal and business account? I would say, it all depends. I have one account for me personally, which I also use professionally. When my new book, Chasing Youth Culture And Getting It Right, is published in April, I will be using another account for book tweets only. I want to make sure that those messages go to people who want data on youth marketing specifically. So the moral of this story is, know your target market. Your tweets will have a greater impact if you’re really focused on who you’re trying to reach.

I talk to stressed out business owners and non-profit leaders almost every day who are just plain overwhelmed with social media. Not because they don't know how to use it and not because they don't understand its value. They're stressed because the space changes at such a rapid pace---the ground is always shifting under their feet so they never really feel like they're gotten a foothold.

So what do you do to keep up with social media while running your business? It's impossible to get on every platform and more importantly, it's just not smart. You can't do that, so don't even try. Instead of focusing on quantity of social connections and sites, focus more on quality control. Here are 6 ways to do it.---Amanda Miller Littlejohn

Despite being just 24, DJ Tay James has accomplished a lot in his field. In addition to being Justin Bieber’s tour DJ, he’s been the go-to-jock for events like the 2010 White House Easter Egg Roll and the 2010 Teen Choice Awards. He still finds time to offer his services to those interested in pursuing a career as a DJ with one-on-one lessons he provides during his downtime.
Although he honed his skills via the traditional method of two turntables, a mic, a mixer, headphones and a few speakers, James is no stranger to the digital age. There’s no way any DJ worth his or her weight in vinyl could ignore the advent of CDJs and the revolutionary Serato. While the advancement of technology is scary to most DJs in the industry nowadays, James couples it with the traditional to use it to his advantage. So aside from headphones and speakers, what tops James’ must-have list of gadgets and apps for the digital age DJ? BlackEnterprise.com picked the hi-tech jock’s brain for the answers. —Amy Andrieux
