EMC, Intel among Award Recipients at Black Engineers’ Gala


The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) recently held its 19th Annual NSBE Golden Torch Awards ceremony at the Boston Convention Center.

The NSBE Golden Torch Awards recognize those who exemplify the organization’s ideals of academic excellence, professional success, and dedication to the advancement of the black community. Since its inception, the awards program has provided millions of dollars in scholarships to talented high school seniors.

The ceremony honored high-achieving students and academics in engineering. In addition, tech companies, and executives that have made incredible efforts in expanding diversity in tech were honored.

The Golden Torch Legacy Award was presented to Theodore Colbert III, chief information officer and vice president of The Boeing Co. Colbert also serves as a member of the board of directors for The Thurgood Marshall College Fund.

Intel Corp. was bestowed with the Corporate Diversity Leadership Award. Intel has been a Silicon Valley champion in the push for diversity, exceeded its hiring goal for 2015 to increase diverse hiring by 40% to 43.1%. Hires from underrepresented communities increased by 31% and with its involvement in many diversity in STEM and business causes.

EMC Corp., an enterprise that offers cloud, Big Data, and storage solutions in its portfolio, was honored with the Corporate Community Service Award.

“As our organization reaches for new heights in pursuit of our mission, our award winners not only show us the possibilities through their achievements, they also provide the resources we need to achieve our goals,” said NSBE national chair Neville Green.

The NSBE Golden Torch Award winners provide success that engineers and aspiring engineers can see, hear, and touch,” Green said. “Their contributions to NSBE and the nation are invaluable.”

NSBE is a 40-year-old organization founded to support and promote the aspirations of collegiate and pre-collegiate students and technical professionals in engineering and technology.

It currently has more than 31,000 members and more than 300 chapters in the U.S. and abroad.

Others honored at the ceremony include:

Bryan Scott, vice president, Integrated Security at Boeing Defense, Space and Security: Distinguished Engineer of the Year Award

Dr. Janice A. Lumpkin, Assistant Professor, University of Cincinnati: Educator of the Year

Emmanuel S. Eneyo, Ph.D., P.E.; Professor Southern Illinois University: Lifetime Achievement in Academia

Tracy Hamilton, Program Management Office, Director, Texas Instruments: Outstanding Woman in Technology.
