ICBA Urging Local Shopping for Holidays

As kids express their baby doll and bicycle dreams, and our emails fire off “for him and her” gift suggestions, Independent Community Bankers of America (ICBA) and the country’s community banks are encouraging us to keep it local this Holiday season. On December 17, ICBA will kick off “Go Local Wednesday” in support of entrepreneurs and small businesses. ICBA employees, who work in offices throughout the nation, will lead by example in patronizing their locally owned and operated establishments. U.S. consumers will be encouraged to follow suit.

John Buhrmaster, ICBA chairman and president and CEO of 1st National Bank of Scotia, N.Y, says “By going local for the holidays—even if it’s not every item on your list—you will make a huge difference in your local economy by putting dollars to work in your neighborhood.”

Although the campaign doesn’t officially take off until December 17, you can start supporting your local businesses now! Check your official city website and see if there is any information on small businesses. With the Holidays right here, you can also use the local bakeries and restaurants to complete your seasonal feasts and to create delicious gift baskets for loved ones. Other ways you can join in on the campaign are:

  • Sponsor a “Go Local” day at community schools, places of worship, libraries or recreation centers, and encourage everyone to take advantage of local resources.
  • Host a “Go Local” gathering in your lobby and invite local restaurant and boutique owners to share their goods and services.
  • Compile a list of local business and create a digital newsletter. Email it to your family and friends in the community and urge them to support.

Visit IBCA for more information on how you can get involved with “Go Local for the Holidays.” If you’re a small business owner, you may find this read on prepping for the busiest shopping day helpful!
