When Latifah arrived on the rap scene in the late ’80s, she offered a fresh new face for the perception of women in hip-hop. It wasn’t long before the New Jersey native’s “ladies first” mission shifted from song to screen. While the Queen had bit roles in films and sitcoms before and after landing her beloved portrayal as “Khadijah” on ’90s sitcom Living Single, the years that followed propelled the budding actress to superstar status and an Oscar nomination. In addition to running her longtime production/management company Flavor Unit, she’s a spokeswoman for both Cover Girl and Jenny Craig, does voiceovers for Pizza Hut, and in the process of launching an HSN fashion line. Add that to her executive producing VH1’s new hit Single Ladies and Latifah’s sitting at an estimated net worth of $50 million.
