This tower was constructed to honor Sir Ernest Oppenheimer, a German-born diamond and gold mining entrepreneur. Prior to his death in 1957, Oppenheimer gave the Soweto City Council 6 million Rand ($811,194 U.S.) to demolish the city's shantytown and construct houses for the residents.
