Raised in west London, writer Courttia Newland is lauded by critics for his translation of Black music and youth subcultures. Newlandâ€™s firstÂ novel,Â The Scholar, was published in 1997 followed byÂ other acclaimed works including Society Within, Snakeskin, The Dying Wish, and Music for the Off-Key.
Co-editor ofÂ IC3: The Penguin Book of New Black Writing in Britain, Newlandâ€™s career has encompassed both screenwriting andÂ playwriting. A formerÂ writer-in-residence forÂ Trinity College, DublinÂ andÂ Georgetown University in Washington D.C., Newland'sÂ latest work, The Gospel According to Cane, will be published in February 2013.
