Washington Cable Supply (No. 64 on the BE INDUSTRIAL/SERVICE 100 with sales of $30.1 million) was recently awarded a five year, multimillion dollar contract from BellSouth and Lucent Technologies to warehouse, cut and coil millions of feet of wire, which will be used by BellSouth to install telephone service throughout its nine-state territory.
The contract’s current worth is estimated at approximately $2 million a year. However, its value could increase to as much as $5 million in a given year, depending on the telephone company’s needs, says Dave Sweet, manager of procurement services for BellSouth.
It’s a win-win situation for everyone,” Sweet says. “BellSouth is saving money and addressing environmental concerns. Lucent is providing the product and Washington Cable is performing a process for which they’re being well compensated.”
Bill Parker, president and CEO of Lanham, Maryland-based Washington Cable, says the contract is critical “because we’re putting time and energy into marketing to the regional Bell-operating companies. This allows us to demonstrate our competence, create additional jobs and increase our business in the Atlanta marketplace.”
