Q: I would like to know if there’s a catalog from which I can order books by black authors on how to start a small business.
–K. Hoffman , Westover, Maryland
A: Unfortunately, there is no such catalog that I know of. However, at the risk of blowing our own horn, I’d recommend the following reading: Black Enterprise Guide to Starting Your Own Business by Wendy Beech (John Wiley & Sons, $19.95), which explains how to start, and successfully run, a small business and what qualities an entrepreneur must have to be successful.
Another worthwhile read is Against All Odds: Ten Entrepreneurs who Followed Their Hearts and Found Success, by Wendy Harris (John Wiley & Sons Inc, $24.95). This book chronicles the challenges of 10 entrepreneurs and explains how they overcame them. The real-life stories include solutions that can apply to just about any business venture. You might also want to take a look at Business Plans Kit for Dummies by Paul Tiffany and Steven D. Peterson (Hungry Minds, Inc., $34.99). If you don’t know much about building a proper business plan, this book offers a good starting point.
These and other business books can be obtained through many distributors, including the following:
