Q: Where can I find a listing of minority-owned auto dealerships in the greater Washington, D.C., metropolitan area?
–J.B. Scott, Washington, D.C.
A: A resource for finding minority-owned businesses in general is the National Directory of Minority-Owned Business Firms. This is a 1,000-plus pages directory published by Business Research Services Inc. Published annually, it has a hefty price tag ($275), so you might want to see if your local library has a copy, or you can search its Website (www.sba8a.com) for a listing of 8(a) certified companies. Business Research Services can be reached at 202-364-6473. It’s located in Washington, D.C.
For auto dealers specifically, a good place to start would be the National Association of Minority Automobile Dealers (NAMAD). Founded in 1980, NAMAD is a 500-member nonprofit organization intended to help expand opportunities for ethnic minorities in the automotive industry. It can let you know on a per-state basis which dealerships are minority owned. NAMAD can be reached toll-free at 800-279-4866, over the Internet at www.namad.com, or by mail at 8401 Corporate Dr., Suite 405, Lanham, MD 20785.
In addition, call your local Chamber of Commerce. Certain cities even have minority-sponsored Chambers of Commerce, such as the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (www.ushcc.com) or the National Black Chamber of Commerce (www.nationalbcc.org). By calling information, you can determine if there’s one in your area.
You can access a list of the top African American-owned auto dealers by logging on to blackenterprise.com and clicking on the BE 100s tab at the top of the page.
