Achieve your biggest goals by taking smaller steps

If you’ve ever wanted to do something big, say, change careers or start a business, you know that planning is the easy part. But sometimes, achieving those goals can be overwhelmingly difficult. Fear of failure and other excuses can quickly replace your initial enthusiasm and rob you of the necessary drive to attain your objectives.

Bear in mind that large-scale success rarely comes overnight. But if you break down large aspirations into smaller goals, you’ll be more likely to stick with them and reap the fruits of your labor. Consider the following lips to help you through the goal-setting process from start to finish:

  • Make sure the goal is realistic. For example, don’t expect to earn an advanced degree in a discipline until you’ve first mastered the introductory and intermediate principles.
  • Establish a deadline for achievement. Without a finite amount of time to complete a goal, you’ll be more likely to procrastinate-a big motivation killer.
  • Treat yourself after each “mini-success.” You’ll tend to work harder when you know there’s a reward waiting at the finish line.
