Believe it or not, many of the popular worldwide locales for New Year’s Eve 1999 are already booked. Walt Disney World has filled all of its hotels, but visitors may still visit the park for the big celebration. Several tour operators have filled spots for trips to Egypt’s pyramids. “Many resorts, hotels, even cruise lines that haven’t yet set a destination are filling up,” says Catherine Juvan, co-author (with Susan Jones) of New Year’s Eve 1999! Millennium Mania (available May 1998 from Open Road Publishers).
Revelers can still mark the millennium at several sites in New York. Check out the city’s Countdown Web site at www.nycvisit.com. You might still be able to get into the Rainbow Room, which started taking 1999 reservations in 1993. The RIHGA Royal Hotel’s New Year’s Eve 1999 weekend deal includes a stay in a penthouse suite, New Year’s Eve dinner at the Rainbow Room, plus a Broadway show: Cost: $10,000 per couple. In the heart of Times Square the Marriott Marquis will host a black-tie gala, concert, dinner and laser light show. Party along the Hudson at the Jacob Javits Center, the site of a planned giant cocktail reception, gourmet four-course meal, concert and fireworks over the Hudson.
In Chicago, the popular Signature Room at The 95th atop the John Hancock Building is putting together its waiting list. Across the globe, the countdown has already started at the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The city’s beltway will be closed off to create the world’s largest rock ‘n’ roll stage, and a light show is planned along the banks of the Seine.
