Marriott Names First African American Franchisee

Marriott International has named Bill Deramus its first African American franchisee. Deramus will lease and operate a 153-room Courtyard Marriott, which opened earlier this year near the Dallas/ Fort Worth Airport. Terms of the deal were not disclosed but Marriott officials says the cost for developing a new Courtyard Hotel averages $67,000- $70,000 per room. Deramus says he plans to exercise an option to purchase the hotel within two years.

Deramus became director of human resources for Marriott Hotels, Resorts and Suites in Houston in 1981 and he has been a regional manager for the Courtyard chain since 1992. Marriott officials says they are stepping up efforts to bring minority franchise owners into the chain.
