The continued downsizing of the U.S. military is providing a variety of economic opportunities for small business owners. Just ask Samuel Metters, president and CEO of McLean, Virginia-based Metters Industries (No. 50 on the BE INDUSTRIAL/SERVICE 100 list). Metters’ systems engineering and software development concern recently acquired a two- year, $57 million blanket purchase agreement to provide services at the Patuxent Naval Air Station (PAX River).
The opportunity arose after the Navy’s Base Realignment Commission decision to consolidate several commands at Patuxant, including the entire Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR). The deal calls for Metters to provide information technology, logistics and technical engineering support over the duration of the contract.
Metters says acquiring the contract has been a long-term goal he’s been trying to secure for several years. He anticipates that his on-site staff will increase significantly over the next six months to deal with the additional workload. Metters is also eyeing a new expanded facility to occupy the Lexington Park area, the city adjacent to the PAX River.
Says Metters: “This contract allows us to give our current and future customers a one-stop shop for a wide range of support and enables them to take full advantage of all the information technology and automated data processing services we provide.”
