NO TEAM SPIRIT

Q: I’ve been assigned to a six-person project team, and we’re not working well together. What should we do?

A: How about first assessing your common courtesy quotient. “In our haste to get ahead in the workplace, manners fall to the wayside,” says Doris Boyer, president of YOung Boyer Associates, a team-building consulting firm in Maplewood, New Jersey. “Punctuality, respect and following business protocol are essential ingredients often forgotten in today’s increasingly popular team environments.”
One of the most frequently logged offenses is lateness. Failing to meet deadlines or to deliver on a promise can be an indelible setback to the smooth operation of a team. Gossip is another. If you’re having problems with a team member, tell him or her, not everyone else. Ask yourself, What do I want my team members to know about me that will make my job easy? Then tell them.

As a team member, you need to be at your battle station and ready to perform. This shows that you are considerate of the other person’s time and the team’s objective. These basic things make for a pleasant work environment and a result-oriented team.
