A: Maybe. Actually, it depends on what you want from your operating system. If you’re fed up with Windows 95’s shortcomings, such as frequent crashes and spotty Plug and Play support, you may want to consider making the upgrade. Some of these problems can be fixed by going to Microsoft’s Web site and downloading the latest patches for Win95. Most of these bug fixes and patches have been incorporated into Win98, but you can get them at the site for free.
On the other hand, if you’re perfectly happy with Win95, leave well enough alone. As long as your PC isn’t giving you headaches, why tamper with a good thing? Win98 is nowhere near as compelling an upgrade as Win95 was from Win 3.x. And since Microsoft has conceded that it will soon make Windows NT the platform of choice for consumers and corporate customers, you’ll be facing another upgrade in the not-too-distant future.
If you’re the type that just has to have the latest and greatest, then go ahead and spend the $90 for the upgrade. While it isn’t a necessary upgrade, Win98 definitely has its benefits. Basically, Win98 lives up to the long-forgotten promises of Win95.
