One Word That Describes You: Renaissance

What does being one of the BEMM 100 Men of Distinction mean to you?

It means a lot. I have always followed Black Enterprise and as a black entrepreneur to be recognized as a BE Modern Man is a recognition I do not take lightly.

What are some examples of how you turned struggle into success?

You turn struggle into success by having a healthy acceptance of failure. You must understand that if you desire to be successful, failure is unavoidable. But failure is not falling down, it is staying down. The successful find a way to pick themselves back up.

What is an important quality you look for in your relationships with others?

I look for people who are willing to invest in themselves and willingness to invest in the relationship. In addition I look for like-minded individuals who believe that we can all win together and that we are not in competition with each other.

What are some immediate projects you are working on?

My firm, BCT Partners, is focused on providing insights about diverse people that lead to equity. We are focused on big data that is analyzing big data sets to help our customers better compete in an increasingly diverse world.

What is the best advice you ever received?

While the world is calling you to be successful, God is calling you to be great.

What is some advice you have for other men who want to make a difference?

Each one reach one, each one teach one. We must be about helping our brothers.

As a busy Modern Man, how do you unwind on vacation? Share a story about your best vacation.

I have traveled quit a bit, but one of my best vacations was a staycation. You can be a public success and a private failure and, for me, time at home with my family is the time I cherish the most.

If you could travel and stay anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

West Africa, because of the connection to African Americans who were taken from West Africa and enslaved in America. I have taken a DNA test and I have proof that I am from West Africa, so this would be a homecoming for me.

What is your “Extraordinary Impact?”

I am trying to be both an example and spread the gospel about wealth creation in the African American community. I do that by growing a successful business, BCT Partners, and creating wealth through my three business partners. Additionally through my speaking, writing, and media appearances, I really focus on getting young people to think and be like entrepreneurs because the key is starting young.

Anything else you’d like to say?

My favorite quote is “we are not meant to see through each other, but to see each other through.” As black men we have a responsibility not to see through each other but to see each other through.

It’s our normal to be extraordinary. Follow @BEModernMan and join the conversation using #BEModernMan.
