TELEVISION When Murphy was 19 years old, he was cast on what would become the legendary television show, Saturday Night Live. According to IMDB, he was initially only hired as a guest performer without any duties. Bringing the Brooklyn native as a full-time cast member paid off well, though. During his four years on the show (1980-1984), SNL earned five different Emmy Award nominations, two of which were specifically for Murphy’s work on the show.
