Reports: GOP Staffer Elizabeth Lauten to Resign After Comments on Obama’s Daughters

According to NBC News, Republican party staffer Elizabeth Lauten is resigning today after controversial comments about Sasha and Malia Obama went viral online.

NBC News Capital Hill producer Alex Moe broke the news via Twitter, as online outrage toward Lauten’s attack continues to stew. Lauten posted a rant over the Thanksgiving holiday on Facebook about the way Sasha and Malia looked and acted as their father, President Barack Obama, pardoned two White House turkeys. Lauten contentiously chided the teenagers for acting, essentially, like teenagers during the annual pre-Thanksgiving event.

“Dear Sasha and Malia, I get it, you’re both in those awful teen years, but you’re part of the first family, try to show a little class,” Lauten wrote in a Facebook post. She would go on to lecture Sasha, 13, and Malia, 16, to not “make faces during televised public events.” Not stopping there, the former RNC media director then engaged in a bit of cyber bullying toward their presidential parents, writing, “Then again, your mother and father don’t respect their positions very much, so I’m guessing you come up short in the role model department.”

Adding some more fuel to the cyber-bullying claims, Lauten ended her Facebook chat with, “dress like you deserve respect, not a spot at the bar.” Later in the day, once the post went viral and caught fire in the press, the embattled GOP staffer removed the controversial post and replaced it with an apology, saying, “After many hours of prayer, I can see more clearly just how hurtful my words were. I’d like to apologize.”
