National Unemployment Rate Drops While Most States Hemorrhage Jobs


While the overall unemployment rate in the US fell slightly to 7.4% in July, the jobless numbers in 28 states worsened.

In a case of mixed messages, the Associated Press reported that the US unemployment rate hit a 4 ½ -year low and employers added 162,000 jobs, despite New Jersey and Nevada leading the list of states that lost jobs. Many of the jobs added were in the South and West.

Nevada showed the highest unemployment rate in July at 9.5%. North Dakota put up the lowest numbers, with a rate of just 3%.
