In the November 1979 cover story, BLACK ENTERPRISE featured a series of profiles on “sports entrepreneurs.”  In the article, we identified players like basketball phenom Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and baseball superstar Lou Brock who started entrepreneurial ventures because they knew “that front-office jobs and advertising endorsements were remote for black athletes.”  Cover subject Arthur Ashe, who managed to land endorsements with AMF/Head racquets and Aetna Life Insurance, also launched Arthur Ashe and Friends, a chain of tennis shops he founded with a group of fellow tennis pros.
