This April 1989 cover shows Percy Sutton, the “Godfather of Urban Radio,” in front of Harlem’s legendary Apollo Theatre, which he acquired, renovated and revitalized as part of a nationally-syndicated Showtime at the Apollo television show. As we interviewed the Tuskegee Airman, civil rights activist and politician who took a single radio station and transformed it into Inner City Broadcasting Corp., he was continuing to develop new media ventures as well as begin the process of handing the reins of his business empire to the next generation.
