Queen Latifah to Star in Lee Daniels’ Music Pilot for Fox

Queen Latifah has made an exciting announcement, sharing publicly that she will be staring in a music-themed project co-written and directed by “Empire” creator Lee Daniels.

Fox has already launched a nationwide open casting call for the show’s three young leads, locking in actresses and singers to play the girls whose stories will be at the center of the drama series.

The big casting news comes just days after Queen Latifah in her critically acclaimed role in NBC’s live musical “The Wiz.” In the newly developing series, the Queen is set to play the character of Carlotta, an Atlanta beauty salon owner, who has an amazing voice, according to reports. The show will be centered around three girls who form a musical act and have dreams of making it big, with the help of their surrogate mother Carlotta (Queen Latifah). United, the trio will begin their journey in the Atlanta music scene together.

Up-and-comers Jude Demorest (Dallas), Ryan Destiny (Low Winter Sun) and Brittany O’Grady (The Messengers) have been set to play the three young leading ladies.

Last summer, Fox announced that the project, titled Star, will showcase the draw of the cut-throat industry, as well as the heartache it causes, in addition to exploring cultural themes from a fresh perspective.

When asked if “Star” would be an “Empire” spin-off, Fox chairman and CEO Dana Walden  responded, “The possibility of a crossover at some point exists, but it’s definitely not what we’re planning right now.”
