Multimedia Editorial Director, BLACK ENTERPRISE
Alan Hughes is the Multimedia Editorial Director at BLACK ENTERPRISE. In this role he is responsible for overseeing business, entrepreneurship and technology content for the brand’s print, online, broadcast and events platforms. An award-winning journalist with nearly a quarter century in the field, he’s a vital member of the editorial management team.Hughes also directs the editorial coverage of the BLACK ENTERPRISE June issue, which ranks America’s largest black-owned businesses and examines the growth and impact of those BE 100s companies each year. He also oversees content and provides direction for the Black Enterprise Entrepreneurs Conference + Expo, the company’s flagship event that draws thousands of business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs annually.
Hughes’ past high-profile feature articles include, “Wall Street Rogues,” a critical look at African Americans accused of SEC violations and other white collar crimes. In “Can Detroit be Saved?” Hughes examined the travails of the Motor City and what part industry can play to right the ship. Another feature, “Black Men Can’t Coach?” probed the disparity between white and African American coaches within the largest collegiate sports division. He also regularly spearheads all international business coverage pertaining – including opportunities and global trends.
Hughes joined BLACK ENTERPRISE in October 2001 as the business editor and later spent three years as a features editor before being promoted to managing editor in 2006 and Editorial Director in 2007. Earlier in his career, he was an editor at Businessweek Online, where he covered the financial markets, writing a twice-weekly overview of the stock and bond markets for the publication’s website. Prior to that, Hughes spent six years analyzing financial markets for Standard & Poor's, the preeminent provider of financial services information.
A New York City native, Hughes is a graduate of Rutgers University and holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism.
