Vote Now: Small Business Awards 2012 Nominees

Cast your ballot for which finalists selected by Black Enterprise deserve People's Choice kudos at the Entrepreneurs Conference in Chicago

Amber's Amazing Animal Baloons' Amber Liggett; Mamma Nia's Vegan Bakery's Nia Froome; Weeds & Moore's Jordan Anderson

This award recognizes entrepreneurs, age 19 or under, committed to the tradition of black business achievement.

At age 8, Amber Liggett received a balloon kit as a gift. She became fascinated with the various techniques for creating colorful balloon shapes and animals. The 16-year-old now has a thriving business providing balloon creations, storytelling, face painting, spin art, sand art, cotton candy, and soon temporary gel tattoos. Liggett even provides “balloons to go,” which are custom decorations pre-made and sold as takeout orders. Her revenues topped $5,500 in 2011. The philanthropic teen also does fundraising for organizations.

  • Mamma Nia’s Vegan Bakery
  • President/CEO: Nia Froome (19)
  • Location: Valley Stream, NY
  • Type of Business: Vegan/Organic Cookies and Cupcakes

Nia Froome was determined to make vegan food accessible and delicious, inspired by her mother who gave up meat after a breast cancer diagnosis 12 years ago. The teen amateur baker and cook began altering cookie recipes and borrowed the catchy name of the musical Mamma Mia to inspire her company’s name. Today, the 19-year-old’s Mamma Nia’s Vegan Bakery specializes in cookies, cinnamon rolls, and cupcakes—all made without eggs or milk. Revenues for 2011 hit $7,000.

  • Weeds & Moore
  • President/CEO: Jordan Anderson (18)
  • Location: Dallas
  • Type of Business: Lawn Care Services

Jordan Anderson began mowing lawns at age 8 to buy a pair of Nike Air Jordan sneakers. Today the 18-year-old is president and CEO of Weeds & Moore, a neighborhood lawn care company with 100 customers and growing. Anderson recently added an eco-friendly focus and two employees. Weeds & Moore raked in 2010 sales of about $3,600 and $7,500 for 2011, with profits going toward Anderson’s college savings. He is training another teen to take over his business and plans to start another landscaping company.

Tillage Construction has been one of our greatest community supports. With the help of Tillage Construction, we have been able to provide $1,000 for needy inner city families during Christmas for 10 years now. We have called the program, The Tillage Family Christmas, where needy families have been selected to receive this gift for their kids Christmas gifts. And on top of that, Tillage Construction has given other needy kids opportunities to participate in our sports programs through yearly scholarships. Now that goes beyond the call of duty for a small business. That is why TILLAGE CONSTRUCTION deserves this honor, for 2012, 2011, 2010, 2009, 2008, 2007, etc… You are WINNERS in our community!!!

This family business knows the importance of sports in the inner city community and we are thankful for their knowledge of this. With their main office being centrally located in the highest crime area in the city, they have become beacons of light that not everyone has abandon this area. Bring it home champs…Tillage Construction deserves this award for being more than just a small business, but for being HOPE in our community.

You deserve this award and more…

  19. Rose says:

It is awesome to see Nia blossom into a hard working and serious entrepreneur. She was on a mission and she stayed with it until she could say mission accomplished.. Yes, the vegan cookies make you say, ummm they are delicious. If you were not told they were vegan you would never know it.

  20. Rose says:

Oh yes! you have my vote. Good luck

  21. Louisiana Academy says:

In this day and age, most community support by businesses are directly from the business’ marketing budget. They want to attract new customers. Not Tillage Construction. When they support, they support from the heart. With all of the support they have given us, not one time have they asked for an ad spot in our programs, a banner in a stadium, a sign on a field, a name on a building, nor a patch on a jersey. This is rare, this is truly committment to community. Now that is what a great family business bring to a community. Tillage Construction should be FAMILY BUSINESS of the YEAR. Keep up the good work and thank you for being our Secret Santas.

  22. Bob and Ginny Sanders says:

Doing well by doing good. You have our vote.
