Create a Platform for your Business

The Internet is run primarily by four platforms: Amazon, iTunes, Google, and Facebook. The valuable lesson that I’ve learned about this is that owning a platform is critical in developing a sustainable business strategy. What is a platform? According to Phil Simon (author of The Age of Platform), a platform is defined as “an extremely valuable and powerful ecosystem that […] scales, morphs, and incorporates new features, users, customers, vendors, and partners.” A platform gives entrepreneurs a greater opportunity to scale their business for sustainable growth. For example the NewMe Accelerator (Angela Benton and Wayne Sutton), TechStars (Brad Feld and David Cohen) and The Lean Startup (Eric Ries) are great examples of platforms that were developed by entrepreneurs.

Where are all the women at in the startup world? If you read most articles about tech startup founders, you’re probably under the impression that only men create mobile apps and launch successful tech companies. Women only make up 35% of startup owners, according to a Kauffman Foundation article published last year. And when it comes to tech startup business owners, an estimated 5% are female.

While the tech world is overwhelmingly male, you can’t ignore the female innovators giving male startup owners a run for their money. BlackEnterprise.com tech columnist Hajj Flemings has compiled a list of women from all walks of life influencing the startup space.

Huffington Post recently put together an impressive list of Women in Tech You Need to Follow on Twitter, showcasing some of the most dynamic women on the Web. We applaud their accomplishments and the doors they have opened for women. Unfortunately, of the 27 women listed, only two—Jenny Deluxe and Ory Okolloh—were Black digerati. The reality is there are many exceptionally remarkable Black women advancing technology and forming networks where women of all races can be mentored to become digital media iconoclasts. Noticing the oversight, BlackEnterprise.com compiled our own list of Black Women in Tech You Need to Follow on Twitter, including social media and technology influencers who push digital technology and new media daily on their blogs and various platforms. This list is by no means all-encompassing, but a step in giving credit where credit is rightfully due. —Marcia Wade Talbert
