If you're anything like me, the idea of waking up at 3am on Black Friday (the day after Thanksgiving when holiday shopping sales generally begin) to go out in the cold, deal with holiday traffic, throngs of pushy people, and unhelpful employees just to buy a toaster or a pair of Dockers just doesn’t seem that appealing. However, if surfing the Web on Cyber Monday (the Monday after Thanksgiving) from the comfort of your home with a cup of coffee in hand for 40% off that Ralph Lauren cashmere sweater on your loved one’s wish list is more your speed then this edition of Suit Your Life is for you. For many Americans, a big part of the holidays involve giving presents to others. But it’s perfectly fine and feasible to not give gifts to family and friends and still enjoy the holiday season.

In fact, if the tough economy or a job layoff has taken a toll on your household budget, this could be the year to not spend any money at all on gifts. Even if you do have money in a bank account to spend, it’s important to realize that there are plenty of other ways to celebrate the season without making all the festivities centered on gift-giving.

Still, the average American is expected to spend $704 on holiday gifts in 2011, according to the National Retail Federation. Should you opt out of this year’s holiday shopping frenzy like the folks who’ve joined Buy Nothing Day? Perhaps. Here are five reasons why it might be wise not to spend any money at all on gifts on Black Friday and this entire holiday season. —Lynnette Khalfani-Cox

Don't buy a product that doesn't meet your needs “It looks like a lot of the e-readers advertised on Black Friday sales are pretty good deals,” says Bradford. It is rumored that the Barnes and Noble Nook, which is usually $150 will be $99 just for Black Friday at Best Buy. “The only caveat is that it has WiFi and not 3G,” says Bradford. 3G is better because you can get an internet connection anywhere there is a cell phone signal, regardless of whether or not there is a WiFi signal. Also, the Nook gets free access to 3G and WiFi on AT&T’s network. “If WiFi is fine with you then that is a really good deal, says Bradford. “Most people aren’t going to need to download a book while standing out on a street corner.” But if downloading a book on the fly is your thing then you might want to spend more for 3G. Leading up to Black Friday stay informed about new models that are soon to be released. A lot of brands will be releasing newer models towards the end of this year and the beginning of the next year. If having the latest product is important to you, don’t buy an older version just because it is on sale.
