While there I got the opportunity to meet (or interrupt depending on how you look at it) NBA player Dwyane Wade (@DwyaneWade) and his actress girlfriend Gabrielle Union (@ItsGabrielleU). Based upon my experience, I wanted to provide some helpful tips on how to properly interrupt a VIP’s dinner plans with technology. —Hajj Flemings" title="Dwyane-Wade-&-Hajj-Flemings-620x480" />

This allows you to share your celebrity moment with your online community.
During the 41st Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Annual Legislative Conference a discussion on Social Media…

The economy and digital technology is at the top of the agenda at the 41st Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Annual Legislative Conference (Sept. 21-24). With the growth of small businesses and the impact of social media, entrepreneurs look to fuel the economy. To address these hot points Congressman Hansen Clarke of metro Detroit will host one of the most strategically important panels during the conference, “Social Media and Entrepreneurship” on September 23, 2011 from 1:30pm to 3:30pm.

In addition to myself, who will serve as moderator, the session panelist include Patricia Cesaire, Director of Digital PR/Marketing at Black Enterprise; Susan Gonzales, Director of External Affairs at Facebook; Chris Genteel, Business Development Manager at Google; Wayne Sutton, Founder and Tech Journalist at SocialWayne.com; and Maynard Scarborough, VP of Gov. Affairs at One Economy Corp. The session will focus on the following two areas: the business and education aspects of social media and entrepreneurship.

Business
As computers grow smaller and access to the Internet grows larger, the way in which we do business is rapidly changing. New tools reduce the barriers to entrepreneurship but also present unique challenges. How are small and medium minority businesses utilizing social media to compete in this new digital era? How are minorities helping drive innovation? And what is the importance of closing the digital divide in this economic climate.

Education
The concern is that despite many of the social media tools becoming more accessible, the wealth within the digital world goes to the “builders.” While there are many ways to make money online, learning to code, making apps, and building networks is where the long-term wealth lies. How do we ensure that minorities are able to close the digital divide so they can participate in this digital wealth building?

If you’re in the DC area this weekend you can attend the session for free. It’s being held this Friday (Sept. 23) between 1:30pm and 3:30pm at the Washington Convention Center, 801 Mt. Vernon Pl NW, Washington, DC 20001. Otherwise you can follow the conversation on Twitter using the CBC hashtag #41stALC or the session hashtag #sme41. Click here for more information regarding this conference.

At the national town hall meeting Thursday hosted by the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation on…

At the national town hall meeting Thursday hosted by the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation on the first full day of its Annual Legislative Conference, the panelists’ messages were centered on entrepreneurship and innovation.

Despite the success of the Recovery Act that the Obama administration frequently touts, many African Americans around the nation, black entrepreneurs in particular, are still wondering when some of those stimulus dollars are going to trickle down to them.

Rick Wade, senior advisor and deputy chief of staff to Commerce Secretary Gary Locke, discussed his efforts to help minority businesses connect with the federal government and state and local governments that are charged with disbursing the bulk of stimulus funds.

“I’ve been traveling all over the country to help spread the word and help minority companies have access to the technical assistance they need,” said Wade, who encouraged entrepreneurs to visit the Minority Business Development Agency’s 60 regional centers for guidance.

“We want to help you but you’ve got to come see us and let us know who you are. We want you in our database and we’ll help broker the relationships. We’re helping to create partnerships with small and larger companies so you can be competitive and succeed,” he said.

One of the more potentially lucrative opportunities is in broadband technology, explained Wade, and the Commerce Department is conducting what he called “pre-meetings” on the topic with African American companies before larger public meetings are held to help educate them about how to navigate what can be a difficult federal bureaucracy.

Health information technology and energy are also major growth areas, noted Melody Barnes, who serves as President Barack Obama’s domestic policy advisor and director of the Domestic Policy Council. She indicated that an initiative in that sector that “will be a huge opportunity for business people and our community” will soon be announced.

Barnes noted that the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was pushing the country forward in terms of economics as a civil rights issue at the time of his death.

“We are there again and cannot afford to lose that opportunity. We have in front of us the chance to be at the table at the front end of a growth industry and sector,” said Barnes. “And if we don’t take advantage of it we’ll find that in five, ten, or 20 years from now, we’ll be looking back at renewable forms of energy, thinking about weatherization and all of the things that create job and wealth creation opportunities, wondering what happened and why we weren’t there. We are there and the goal is to take advantage of it.”

U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk suggested that entrepreneurs explore opportunities to conduct business abroad, pointing out that 95% of the world’s consumers live outside of the United States and that 97% of the firms that export products and services are small businesses.

“A lot of them look like you and I but represent less than 5% of our exports. I look at that as huge opportunity for us working with Commerce, SBA and others to educate small businesses about the opportunities you have to grow your businesses by simply beginning to look at opportunities to export,” said Kirk, adding that www.ustr.gov is the place to start exploring that possibility.

Congressional Black Caucus at Statuary Hall

This afternoon at the Capital Building in National Statuary Hall, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) honored the members of the CBC for their longstanding efforts on Capital Hill.

“The 42 members of the Congressional Black Caucus collectively are the conscience of the Congress. They demonstrate that America is best when our glorious diversity is in evidence in the halls of power,” said Pelosi.

She also lauded the fallen members of the CBC who recently passed including chairwomen Stephanie Tubbs Jones, Juanita Millender-McDonald and Congresswoman Julia Carson. Pelosi made reference to the release of a new edition of the book Black Americans in Congress, which is dedicated to the memory of the late Congressman Julian Dixon of California and celebrated the life of CBC co-founder Gus Hawkins

“At a time of economic upheaval and uncertainty when we are fighting to protect working and middle class Americans, Gus Hawkins’ record in Congress can serve as a guidebook to protecting the American Dream,” she said.

Pelosi’s comments were followed by Sen. Reid who mentioned that today the United States Senate finally passed the Emmett Till Unsolved Civil Rights Crimes Act. “This legislation honors the memory of an innocent 14 year old boy from Chicago, who was brutally beaten to death, for no good reason,” he said noting that Republicans blocked the bill for over a year. “The bill we passed today will give the Justice Department the tools necessary to finally investigate and prosecute fatal civil rights-era crimes still wanting for justice.”

Rep. Kendrick Meek (D-FL), chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation invoked a since of pride calling this a “Spiritual Moment” to stand in Statuary Hall, knowing that the country faces the preface of the first CBC member to potentially “walk through this chamber and become the first Black President of the United States of America.”

“Today we celebrate 137 years since the first Black person was elected to congress,” said Rep. Carolyn C. Kilpatrick of Michigan, chairwoman of the congressional Black Caucus after the celebration in response to Rep. Meek’s statement. “We are standing on the shoulders from 137 years ago. We are honored, privileged and we must not take it for granted. We have much work to do and the dye is not cast until Nov. 4.”

Meanwhile, during Pelosi, Reid, Kilpatrick and Meeks speeches, Sen. McCain announced on television his intention to suspend the campaign and his desire to cancel the presidential debate scheduled for Friday evening with the intent that the presidential candidates work towards a solution for our country’s economic challenges. He encouraged Barack Obama to follow his lead.

Whether or not McCain took the lead in this effort is a matter of contention. According to a source at Fox News it was Obama who reached out to McCain early Wednesday morning to suggest a similar intention.

Regardless of who reached out to whom, some agree that both Senators belong in session to discuss the $700 billion financial rescue package and others believe that an effective president should be able to accomplish both objectives. In a news conference later Wednesday afternoon Obama responded to McCain saying that he saw no need to cancel the debates.

“The debate should take place as scheduled,” remarked Pelosi to NPR this evening. “We have to be able to do a couple of things at once. That’s what leadership requires.”

After the event at Statuary Hall Senator Sheila Jackson Lee commented that congress should delay a vote until more thorough investigation is made into who will manage the bailout. “I want to make sure that no one who is responsible for this collapse is able to sit on the commission,” says Lee. “I want us to think deliberatively and be thoughtful about what kind of restructuring we want to have. I want us to make sure that we include diversity and if we go forward that we protect community banks in our neighborhoods—[including] the very few African American banks that still exist such as Unity Bank in Houston Texas.

Several attendees expressed the opinion that McCain wanted to suspend the debate because before the bank crisis he stood firmly on the stance that government should not interfere with the free market.

“It was Sen. McCain who said that the underpinnings of our economy are strong. Well these are the underpinnings,” said California Rep. Diane Watson referring to rampant foreclosure rates and the collapse of several financial institutions in the past year.

“I do believe that Barack Obama will be president, but no single entity will get us to where we need to be,” said Rep. Danny K. Davis of Illinois. “There are serious discrepancies in African American life. We have a lot of work to do, but you can’t work without hope. I think James Weldon Johnson was right when he said we are facing the rising sun of our new day begun.”
