All work and no play can make for a dull day at the office, but being productive is what matters most to employers. While having a jovial co-worker that can lighten the mood in the workplace can be a plus, he or she can wind up being a major distraction when there’s a tight deadline looming. The last thing any effective team needs is an internal distraction, be it a talkative co-worker or an unfocused one. Jonathan Smith, better known as Lil Jon, knows firsthand how detrimental a distracting co-worker can be to working efficiently and effectively. For the past several weeks, he and fellow Celebrity Apprentice cast mates had to deal with the always-erratic Gary Busey, who would constantly interrupt, confuse and undermine his team’s progress during each assigned task. With the frustrating actor finally “fired” in last night’s episode, BlackEnterprise.com caught up with Lil Jon to get his tips on dealing with a distracting co-worker (named Gary Busey).

Best known for his portrayal of Tee Tee on BET’s The Game, Barry Floyd earned his position in the spotlight the hard way. With ambitions of being a writer, the Philadelphia native headed to Hollywood to follow his dreams, but like many aspiring scribes, he saw those dreams deferred. Following a string of production assistant jobs on such TV series as Cuts, Everybody Hates Chris and Girlfriends, Floyd fell into acting when one of the Girlfriends performers was late for rehearsal and he was asked to stand in. Impressed with his performance, the casting director suggested Floyd audition for a part on an upcoming show called The Game. “I had no intention of acting,” he explains. “I was just in the right place at the right time.” During the course of the show’s inaugural run on The CW network, Floyd sharpened his acting skills, earning more camera time in the process. Now, at the close of the sitcom’s resurrected season on BET, the actor is refocused on his initial goal, working as the head writer on the online sketch comedy series, Purple Stuff TV. Managing to navigate his way through the bright lights of Tinseltown, Floyd shares a few of his trade secrets with BlackEnterprise.com.

When I interviewed Renetta McCann in 2003 as Black Enterprise’s Corporate Executive of the Year, the now former CEO of Starcom MediaVest Group in Chicago was, at the time, the only Black woman to hold the chief executive seat at a major firm. When asked about influences in her career, one seemed strikingly odd--it was Don Corleone, the central character in the classic book and movie The Godfather. McCann said following his guidelines were instrumental in her climb to the top. Here are her five takeaways from the infamously celebrated mob boss that women can use in the workplace.

Traveling abroad can bring about great memories, eye-opening experiences and lucrative business connections. But without the proper research and planning, it can also mean memorable faux pas that could inadvertently bring offense or embarrassment, specifically when it comes to a major part of one's trip: dining. Many of the most important business deals and social connections are made over a meal, so knowing the nuances of dining abroad can serve as both an added plus and a necessity. Malla Haridat, CEO of New Designs for Life, a development and training company for entrepreneurs, knows a thing or two about dining globally, having traveled to many countries both for leisure and pleasure. She shares her insights on the do's and don'ts:

When it comes to salary, know your worth: Wait to discuss salary after you’ve been made an offer. At that point, don’t walk into the situation thinking you should accept the base rate or what the company is offering you. You’ve done your research and know your skill set, so now you can gauge what’s appropriate for you in comparison to your industry. Present a salary range to your employer. In 1994 Curtiss Pope's first job was as a grocery store clerk. Only 15, he couldn’t understand why there wasn’t a document to show customers which aisle had the bread and which aisle had the dairy. “I had to be well versed in the store layout,” remembers Pope. Fast-forward to 2008; Pope, now a software engineer, was on a grocery run with his wife when he got a spark of inspiration. He wanted to create a mobile app to help customers navigate their stores. That's exactly what he did. The app, AisleFinder, helps shoppers find their grocery items based on their shopping list. It also provides users with coupons and collects information about shoppers’ habits. Pope’s wife, along with several of his friends and family, thought it was a great idea and gave him moral support; along with $22,000. Unfortunately, the national grocery store chains didn’t feel the same way. It took a year and a half before Pope, and his four-person staff, were able to get a pilot deal with national grocery retailer, Safeway Inc. After a lot of coaxing the store agreed that starting this January they would endorse his app in 40 of their stores across California. Although AisleFinder still has a long way to go, Pope says that the deal with Safeway is already opening doors to other retailers. Here are his 10 tips for closing a deal with a national brand.
