Seeking perfection in today’s business world is not a successful business strategy. This does not mean that the need for excellence, great customer service, and preparation and planning has to be left to chance. However, when you don't fixate on perfection it means you can move forward with a business idea without waiting until all elements are exactly right.

Don't get caught up in the Perfection Trap: the illusion that everything has to be just right before you will launch. It often serves as an accelerator that moves you beyond what is needed and keeps you from working smarter. It freezes you into over-thinking everything and talking yourself out of even starting. The other problem with trying to achieve perfection is that it is really a moving target.

Here are three Perfection Traps and how you can free yourself from their grip. ---Sheri Riley

Louisiana born, Wisconsin raised and New York grown, Richard “Rico Love” Butler discovered his love of words at the age of 4. By 7-years old, he started coupling his admiration for written expression with music, which led to a profitable career as a songwriter. But his path to success was not easy. While attending Florida A&M University to obtain a degree in journalism, Love realized school wouldn’t be enough. Embarking on trips to Atlanta every weekend to meet with the execs of Crown World Entertainment, the go-getter got his break in the studio with R&B group Jagged Edge. But it wasn’t until 2004 when he got the chance to work with Usher—penning “Throwback” for the Atlanta–based singer’s diamond-certified album —that his dreams materialized. Since then, Love has written and produced records for Beyoncé, Michelle Williams, Keri Hilson, Chris Brown, and most recently Kelly Rowland for her No. 1 single “Motivation.” Love accomplished everything through his shear will and determination and now shares his six tips for being successful. —Amber McKynzie

As a professional career consultant, I work with many clients who haven't been able to reach their career goals, not because of the economy, but because they can't get past their own excuses.

Despite the dim reality of the current economy, people are still being hired every day. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, "from December 2010 to January 2011, the number of unemployed decreased 600,000 over the month, and fell by almost 1 million from January 2010 to January 2011." While these numbers may not represent the vast improvement that we'd like to see as Americans, they do reflect the fact that someone, somewhere is moving from the unemployment line.

Take a look at some of the common excuses, and learn how to get past them to pursue your success. ---Aisha M. Taylor

DO sweat the small stuff. Be aware of the way you carry yourself and the effect it may have on workplace interactions. You could inadvertently be sending the wrong message with even the slightest action, such as pointing when you speak or crossing your arms during meetings. "I realized I’m a very analytical person, so oftentimes when I’m in deep thought, I don’t smile," Collier says. " People would look at me and say, 'What’s wrong with you?' I had to train myself, and my clients, to smile more."
