HAVE A SINCERE & COHESIVE TEAM

“The saying, ‘It takes a village’ is something that I live every single day. And having a team that really believes in the brand, really understands me—we sit at the table together as a family and work on this together—is what carries that vision forward and makes it less difficult. It’s more challenging when everybody at the table has a different agenda.”

Focus on Storytelling

What stories can you tell about your business. I spoke this week to a group of arts, tourism and cultural organizations at Cultural Tourism DC's annual conference in Washington, DC. (Members range from Smithsonian Institution Directors to jazz clubs to tiny art galleries and film festivals). When cultural organizations approach social media, they can't go for the hard sell because arts marketing is more about storytelling. Take a cue from these organizations and focus on the story behind your service or product. Can you give your audience a behind-the-scenes view? Can you offer online previews to build buzz before a big event?

Skip the objective. Objectives are outdated and rarely used in today’s world of professional resume writing. The purpose of the objective was to tell employers what you were seeking, i.e. “a challenging sales position.” Instead, the objective has now been replaced with a career profile or a summary of qualifications which tells employers exactly what you have to offer, i.e. “accomplished professional with 10 years sales experience.” Your resume should include a concise yet quality career profile which clearly indicates what you have to offer, rather than just what you desire. Employers are far more attracted to a candidate who actually brings something to the table.

On Wednesday, April 4, 2012, Black Enterprise teamed up with Walmart to host 20/20 Vision: Supplier Diversity in the 21st Century, a forum to explore opportunities with corporate entities and the City of Chicago. The economic forum was designed to explore how entrepreneurs can best position their ventures to form profitable partnerships with large corporations as part of their supply chain. The day long event, which was held at the Chicago Hilton, covered topics like “Navigating the Procurement Maze” and “Scaling Up To Meet The Right Contract.” Here are some of the highlights from the program:

Be ready for business!

When publicity strikes, you may get a surge in foot traffic or web traffic. If you have a brick and mortar business, get ready by bringing on extra temporary staff, and ordering extra product. Get your web site ready by creating landing pages and email captures so you can keep in touch with all of your new customers even after they've come and gone. Offer a coupon for new e-mail list subscribers, then send over your newsletter and let them know what's new with your business each month.

I've been exploring social media's latest runaway site – Pinterest*, a virtual bulletin board that allows users to share images, objects, and links they find interesting or inspiring. While, personally, I enjoy pinning photos of stylish outfits, chic MacBook and iPad cases, and outtakes from home décor magazines, I see the value this platform has for brands. When it comes to my brand, I’ve taken a thought leadership approach— just check my "Essential Books" board to see what branding, social media and marketing books I’m reading. This user-friendly platform is already proving to be valuable for businesses.
There’s serious potential to drive sales for business owners. Getting images of your products pinned and repinned can literally drive customers to your door step. At the very least, it will drive traffic to your website where customers can request your service.

Here are 6 ways small businesses can extend their brand and up their revenue using Pinterest:

I talk to stressed out business owners and non-profit leaders almost every day who are just plain overwhelmed with social media. Not because they don't know how to use it and not because they don't understand its value. They're stressed because the space changes at such a rapid pace---the ground is always shifting under their feet so they never really feel like they're gotten a foothold.

So what do you do to keep up with social media while running your business? It's impossible to get on every platform and more importantly, it's just not smart. You can't do that, so don't even try. Instead of focusing on quantity of social connections and sites, focus more on quality control. Here are 6 ways to do it.---Amanda Miller Littlejohn

While small business loans slid 4.1% from 2009 to 2010, there was still some $310 million extended in 2010. So while credit may be tight, capital is out there. But what do banks look for these days before extending a loan? “I think a lot of people seem to have the impression that banking is rocket science,” says Douglas Dillon, Senior Vice President of Commercial Lending for Industrial Bank (No. 8 on the BE BANKS list with $382 million in assets). “I’m not of that impression.” He says banks look at the following five criteria before extending a business loan. —Alan Hughes

Accelerate your payments and delay your collections. Towards the year end, purchase any needed supplies and delay any collections. Purchasing supplies will lower your profit thereby reducing the amount of taxes paid in the current year. Delaying collections will lower your income level, thereby reducing the tax amount owed in the current year. Although the taxes will not be assessed in the current tax year, they will be delayed to the next year. “I definitely do caution business owners because, if they spend too much at year-end, in January, some companies, they’re struggling to make payroll,” says Robbie Hampton. However, this strategy really only works when the company is profitable.
